Steve Bannon, Trump's Former Aide, Begins His Federal Prison Sentence
Bannon Reports to Prison Amid Claims of Political Prosecution.
Former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon began his federal prison sentence on Monday after the Supreme Court declined to delay his incarceration while he appeals his conviction for contempt of Congress. Bannon, 70, received a four-month prison sentence for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the Democrat-run January 6 committee in 2022.
After a protracted appeals process, a federal judge mandated that Bannon report to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, on July 1. Before turning himself in, Bannon addressed supporters, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), expressing his defiance.
“I am proud to go to prison,” Bannon declared. “If this is what it takes to stand up to tyranny; if this is what it takes to stand up to the [Attorney General Merrick] Garland corrupt criminal DOJ; if this is what it takes to stand up to Nancy Pelosi; if this is what it takes to stand up to Joe Biden — I’m proud to do it.”
Supreme Court Decision: The Supreme Court's decision not to postpone Bannon's sentence came on Friday, following his request for a delay.
Claims of Political Persecution: Bannon has consistently argued that his prosecution was politically motivated, aimed at undermining former President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. “This is about shutting down the MAGA movement, shutting down grassroots conservatives, shutting down President Trump,” he said after his sentencing. “Not only are we winning, we are going to prevail and every number and every poll shows that.”
Bannon is not the only Trump aide facing prison time. Peter Navarro, another Trump associate, began serving a four-month sentence on March 19 after being convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to testify before the January 6 Committee.
House Republican Support: Recently, top House Republicans announced their plan to support Bannon’s efforts to overturn his conviction. They intend to file a brief with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, challenging previous arguments made by the House regarding the organization of the January 6 Committee during the Democrat-led Congress.
Bannon’s imprisonment underscores the ongoing legal battles and political tensions surrounding the January 6 investigations. His claims of political persecution resonate with many of his supporters, highlighting the deep divisions in American politics.
