Speaker Johnson Dismisses DNC Momentum, Claims 'Real Campaign' Starts After Labor Day

Johnson argues the real campaign begins next month, with the GOP poised for victory.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) isn’t fazed by the enthusiasm currently on display at the Democratic National Convention. In a Tuesday interview with Fox News, Johnson shrugged off what he described as the Democrats’ “sugar high,” predicting that the real battle for the White House and Congress will kick off after Labor Day.

“Everything that we’re seeing at the convention — everything they’re saying, is patently untrue,” Johnson remarked, dismissing the excitement around Vice President Kamala Harris as she prepares to lead the Democratic ticket. Johnson pointed out that the same Democrats who are now rallying behind Harris were among those pressuring President Joe Biden to drop out of the race.

Johnson accused the Democrats of painting a misleadingly rosy picture of the economy, ignoring the struggles that everyday Americans face. “That’s why they’re out there, you know, touting the economy when they broke the economy, clearly,” Johnson said. “Inflation is at record highs and everyone’s struggling and they’re looking right into the camera and trying to pretend like everything’s great.”

Beyond the economy, Johnson highlighted the failures of the Biden administration in national security and immigration. “They’ve put us in jeopardy on the world stage,” he stated, pointing to ongoing global conflicts and the crisis at the U.S. southern border. “They’ve opened the border wide and that is a catastrophe in every city in every state around the country.”

Johnson suggested that Democrats’ current high spirits would fade once the DNC concludes, and the intensity of the presidential race ramps up in earnest after Labor Day. “They want people to believe that what we see is not true, and that’s not going to work. I think they’re on a sugar high right now,” he said.

Looking ahead to November, Johnson expressed confidence in the GOP’s prospects. “I’m convinced, y’all, we’re going to grow the House majority, win back the Senate for the Republican Party, and Donald Trump is going to be returned to the White House because of all of this,” Johnson declared.

Fox News host Dana Perino closed the interview by asking Johnson about reports that some House Republicans have been warned their races might be tighter than expected. Johnson’s advice was clear: “Keep fighting, to run like we’re 10 points behind.” But he added with optimism, “We’re ahead in the polls, we are going to grow the majority, and we are very bullish about November.”
