Senate Investigates Pro-Palestinian Group for Hamas Ties

Senator Bill Cassidy exposes disturbing links between campus activist group and designated terror network.

The United States Senate has launched a formal investigation into American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) over alarming allegations that its leadership has extensive ties to Hamas, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. The probe, led by Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), zeroes in on the group's activities across American college campuses and the dangerous influence it may be spreading among students.

“This group’s leaders have ties to Hamas and helped create the group Students for Justice in Palestine,” Cassidy said Thursday during a Senate hearing on the spike in anti-Semitism at universities. The investigation falls under the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, which Cassidy chairs.

The evidence laid out in Cassidy’s letter is damning:

  • Nine individuals tied to AMP have direct connections to Hamas or Hamas-linked groups.

  • AMP has played a central role in organizing Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a group suspended or banned on multiple campuses due to safety concerns.

  • AMP leaders have helped raise funds for the Holy Land Foundation, a so-called charity shut down by the federal government after it funneled over $12 million to Hamas.

One AMP board member, Salah Sarsour, reportedly raised funds for Hamas’s military wing and sent money to a known Hamas commander. Other speakers and organizers tied to AMP including Jamal Said, Kifah Mustafa, and Mohammed El-Mezain have similar connections to terror-linked organizations. El-Mezain, a leader of the Holy Land Foundation, even appeared at an AMP-sponsored event as recently as 2023.

The current executive director of AMP, Osama Abuirshaid, previously ran a Hamas-linked newspaper and reportedly published interviews with senior Hamas leaders. In 2014, his name appeared on the website of Hamas’s military arm, the al-Qassam Brigades.

This isn’t a fringe issue it’s a national security threat that has found a foothold on American campuses. AMP has helped coordinate events at Rutgers, UCLA, and other institutions, and played a key role in organizing the National SJP Conference, held at UCLA a campus that has now seen over 200 arrests tied to anti-Israel demonstrations.

Senator Cassidy is demanding answers and documentation from AMP by April 9, specifically regarding its financial dealings and any known affiliations with Hamas operatives. He has also requested information from several universities, including Columbia, UCLA, and George Washington University, about AMP’s and SJP’s campus activities.

Meanwhile, over 60 colleges and universities are currently under federal investigation for potential Title VI violations related to antisemitic discrimination. That number is likely to grow as new details emerge.

Let’s be clear: Hamas is a terrorist organization. And if American-based nonprofits are acting as its mouthpieces especially while targeting impressionable college students it’s time to shut them down and hold them accountable.
