Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Nomination Clears Senate Filibuster Hurdle

Trump’s Pick For HHS Moves Toward Final Confirmation Vote.

The Senate voted Wednesday to break the filibuster on President Donald Trump’s nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), moving him one step closer to confirmation. The 53-47 vote fell strictly along party lines, setting up a final confirmation vote expected on Thursday.

Kennedy, the nephew of President John F. Kennedy and son of former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, initially ran for the Democratic nomination in the 2024 election before breaking ranks and mounting an independent bid. After dropping out, he aligned with Trump, promoting a Make America Healthy Again agenda one that challenges the pharmaceutical industry, the processed food lobby, and the government’s mishandling of public health.

Trump’s selection of Kennedy signals a major shift in how the federal government will approach health policy:

  • Kennedy has long fought against corporate influence in public health, exposing the cozy relationship between Big Pharma and the federal agencies that are supposed to regulate it.

  • He has vowed to clean up the nation’s food supply, eliminate harmful chemicals, and restore transparency to public health agencies.

  • During confirmation hearings, Kennedy denied being “anti-vaccine” but insisted that safety and accountability should be top priorities.

Trump praised Kennedy as the right leader to take on the entrenched corruption in Washington’s health bureaucracy.

“For too long, Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation, and disinformation when it comes to Public Health,” Trump said. “Mr. Kennedy will restore these Agencies to the traditions of Gold Standard Scientific Research and beacons of Transparency, to end the Chronic Disease epidemic, and to Make America Great and Healthy Again!”

Despite Kennedy’s strong credentials and history of exposing corruption, Democrats have launched an all-out assault to block his confirmation. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and others have painted Kennedy as “dangerous” simply for questioning the mainstream medical establishment.

Even Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who had previously expressed willingness to support some Trump nominees, publicly announced he would vote against Kennedy, just as he opposed Tulsi Gabbard’s confirmation as Director of National Intelligence.

While the GOP holds a 53-47 Senate majority, not every Republican senator has committed to voting for Kennedy. However, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), a physician who was initially hesitant, announced his support after extensive discussions with Kennedy and the Trump administration.

“I want to thank [Vice President JD Vance] specifically for his honest counsel. With the serious commitments I’ve received from the administration and the opportunity to make progress on the issues we agree on like healthy foods and a pro-American agenda, I will vote yes,” Cassidy stated.

With a final confirmation vote expected soon, all eyes are on whether the GOP holds the line and delivers Kennedy to the top of HHS where he is poised to shake up the system like never before.
