Schumer Threatens Shutdown Over Voter ID Measure
Democrats vow to block government funding if GOP includes SAVE Act to require proof of citizenship for voting.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made it crystal clear Monday: Democrats would rather shut down the government than require proof of citizenship to vote.
At the center of the standoff is the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a Republican-led proposal that would mandate documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and identity before registering to vote in federal elections. Backed by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), the measure is gaining traction as part of the House’s ongoing negotiations over government funding.
Schumer’s response? Pure obstruction.
“The SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow-type laws to the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate,” Schumer declared.
“It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to.”
This is the current Democratic Party: willing to hold the government hostage to protect the ability of non-citizens to register and vote.
Let’s be clear requiring proof of citizenship is not voter suppression. It’s common sense. Every American must show ID to open a bank account, fly on a plane, or buy certain over-the-counter medications. But according to Schumer and the Democrats, asking someone to prove they’re a citizen before voting is “reminiscent of Jim Crow.”
That’s not just dishonest it’s dangerous.
Democrats claim the SAVE Act would “disenfranchise millions,” but what they’re really afraid of is losing control over a broken system that invites fraud and abuse. In a time when our elections are already under intense scrutiny, the Left continues to undermine trust by opposing basic guardrails.
Republicans, meanwhile, are doing their job.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says Republicans are focused on responsibly funding the government while addressing genuine security threats at the border and in the ballot box.
“Our intention is by Tuesday, all agencies of the federal government, except for that one, and then we’ll have two weeks of good faith negotiations, to figure it out,” Johnson told Meet the Press.
But Schumer’s line in the sand is unmistakable: if Republicans dare to include a voter ID bill, he’ll tank the funding package, even if it means prolonging the shutdown he blames on Trump.
The irony? The American people overwhelmingly support voter ID laws. A 2023 Rasmussen poll found 74% of likely voters favor requiring photo ID to vote, including a majority of independents and even some Democrats.
And yet, Schumer and his Senate allies would rather grind Washington to a halt than ensure that only U.S. citizens cast votes in U.S. elections.
Rep. Luna called out the gamesmanship directly on X “The SAVE Act is dead on arrival unless [Sen. John] Thune removes the filibuster or Democrats break from Schumer to save their own billions of dollars in projects.”
So while Democrats cry about “democracy,” they’re the ones threatening to shut it down unless they get their way.
The House Rules Committee is expected to meet at 4 p.m. today to determine whether the funding package, with or without the SAVE Act, moves forward. But one thing is now clear: Democrats will risk a shutdown to keep loopholes in place that threaten the integrity of our elections.
