Historic ‘Appeal To Heaven’ Flag Taken Down from San Francisco City Hall

Left-wing campaign pressures city to replace Revolutionary War symbol with American flag.

The City of San Francisco has removed the historic “Appeal To Heaven” flag from outside city hall following a left-wing smear campaign. The flag, which dates back to the American Revolutionary War, was targeted by activists and linked by The New York Times to the January 6 Capitol riot, due to its previous display at Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s beach home.

  • Historical Significance
The “Appeal To Heaven” flag was used during the American Revolution, flown by George Washington’s ships as they intercepted British vessels. It was the official maritime flag of Massachusetts from 1776 to 1971.

  • Controversy and Removal
San Francisco Recreation and Parks communications manager Daniel Montes stated that the flag’s association with groups that do not align with the city’s values prompted its replacement with the American flag.

  • Justice Alito’s Response
Amidst pressure for him to recuse himself from election-related cases, Alito emphasized that the decision to fly the flag was made by his wife, who exercises her First Amendment rights independently.

Justice Alito addressed the controversy by noting his wife’s fondness for flying various flags, ranging from patriotic to seasonal ones. He clarified that he was not involved in the decision to display the “Appeal To Heaven” flag and was unaware of its supposed link to the January 6 events.

“I recall that my wife did fly that flag for some period of time, but I do not remember how long it flew. And what is most relevant here, I had no involvement in the decision to fly that flag,” Alito stated. “As I said in reference to the other flag event, my wife is an independently minded private citizen. She makes her own decisions, and I honor her right to do so.”

Alito concluded that a reasonable person would not see this as grounds for his recusal from Supreme Court cases, underscoring his duty to reject the recusal request based on politically motivated pressures.

This incident highlights the ongoing cultural battles and the lengths to which activists will go to influence public perception and judicial proceedings.
