Rubio Calls Russia-Ukraine Talks Most Productive Yet Under Trump Peace Plan

As Trump pushes for a Thanksgiving deal, progress accelerates on bold new framework to end the war.

In a major development in global diplomacy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Sunday that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have reached their most productive stage yet, thanks to aggressive U.S. mediation under President Donald Trump’s leadership.

Rubio told reporters that the latest round of negotiations built around a 28-point peace framework proposed by the Trump administration has yielded the most progress seen in months.

“It was probably the most productive day we have had on this issue, maybe in the entirety of our engagement,” Rubio said. “The items that remain are not insurmountable. We just need more time than what we have today.”

According to the White House, the updated peace framework aims to:

  • Provide security guarantees for Ukraine

  • Offer a path for Russia’s re-entry into the global economy under strict conditions

  • Ensure any agreement upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty and results in a durable and just peace

Rubio added that President Trump is “quite pleased” with the speed of progress. And for good reason. This marks a sharp contrast from the stagnant, unfocused diplomatic efforts seen under the Biden administration, where aid flowed endlessly and results remained nonexistent.

Still, the president made clear Sunday morning that there’s more work to do. In a blunt social media post, Trump slammed Ukrainian leadership for showing “zero gratitude” and criticized Europe for “continuing to buy oil from Russia” while the U.S. foots the bill for diplomacy and defense.

The statement appears to have triggered a quick response. Hours later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a statement thanking Trump personally:

“Ukraine is grateful to the United States, to every American heart, and personally to President Trump for the assistance that – starting with the Javelins – has been saving Ukrainian lives.”

Zelensky added that while progress is being made, “peace must be dignified” and fully resolve the core issue: preventing future aggression by Russia.

According to the White House, negotiators have already drafted an updated and refined peace framework, and final decisions will be made by Trump and Zelensky directly.

A joint statement affirmed that the two sides “showed meaningful progress toward aligning positions” and will continue working together to secure Ukraine’s security, reconstruction, and long-term stability.

President Trump has set a hard deadline of Thanksgiving for wrapping up the talks a timeline that some viewed as unrealistic just weeks ago, but now appears attainable under his high-pressure, results-first diplomacy.

Let’s not forget: under Biden, the war dragged on endlessly, American taxpayers were drained for billions in aid, and no coherent peace plan ever emerged. Now, under Trump’s leadership, we’re seeing real movement fast.

Peace through strength isn’t just a slogan it’s working.
