Marco Rubio Unanimously Confirmed by Senate as Secretary of State

Florida senator becomes the first confirmed member of Trump’s new cabinet.

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) as Secretary of State, making him the first official cabinet member of President Donald Trump’s new administration. Rubio’s confirmation on Monday evening was historic, receiving a unanimous 99-0 vote.

Breaking with tradition, Rubio cast a vote for himself an unusual move for nominees, who typically vote “present” when being considered for cabinet positions. The vacancy left by Vice President JD Vance’s Senate departure reduced the chamber’s total number to 99 senators at the time of the vote.

Fox News congressional reporter Chad Pergram highlighted the significance of Rubio’s decision:

“Vote still open, but Senate on track to confirm Rubio as Secretary of State, 99-0... Note that Rubio broke with custom and voted for himself. Senators usually vote ‘present’ when they are up for cabinet slots.”

Immediately following his confirmation, Rubio officially resigned his Senate seat, clearing the way for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to appoint his replacement. Rubio’s departure marks another shift in Florida politics as the state plays an increasingly pivotal role on the national stage.

Rubio’s confirmation process was swift. Just an hour before the final vote, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously advanced his nomination with a 22-0 vote. Rubio’s bipartisan approval reflects his reputation for foreign policy expertise, honed during his time on the Foreign Relations Committee and as a leading voice on global issues.

Rubio’s confirmation was part of a busy day for the Senate, which also advanced other high-profile nominees for President Trump’s administration. Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth and CIA Director nominee John Ratcliffe both cleared committee hurdles. Ratcliffe’s nomination even garnered support from some Democrats, a rare sign of bipartisanship in an increasingly divided Senate.

Meanwhile, the Senate passed the Laken Riley Act, underscoring the legislative body's packed agenda as the new administration takes shape.

As Secretary of State, Rubio will be tasked with steering America’s foreign policy in alignment with President Trump’s vision of putting American interests first. His immediate challenges include addressing tensions with China, rebuilding alliances in the Middle East, and countering global threats such as cybersecurity attacks and terrorism.

With unanimous Senate support, Rubio enters his role with strong bipartisan backing a rarity in today’s polarized political climate. His experience, combined with his deep understanding of foreign policy, positions him to make an immediate impact on the international stage.
