Rubio's New Bill Targets Chinese Government Corruption

Senator Marco Rubio leads the charge against the Chinese Communist Party's corrupt practices.

Florida GOP Senator Marco Rubio has introduced a groundbreaking bill in the U.S. Senate aimed at exposing the corruption of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Titled the “Confronting CCP Malign Influence Act of 2024,” this legislation seeks to reveal the vast wealth and corrupt activities of the CCP leadership.

Key Highlights of the Bill:

  • Mandate for Transparency: The bill requires the Director of National Intelligence to prepare a comprehensive, unclassified report on the wealth and corrupt activities of top CCP officials. This includes the General Secretary of the CCP, senior leadership in the Central Committee, the Politburo, and other regional Party Secretaries.

  • Public Accessibility: The report, to be completed within 90 days of the bill’s enactment, will be made publicly available, ensuring transparency and accountability.

  • Congressional Oversight: Within 180 days, the Director of National Intelligence or a designee must testify before the House and Senate Intelligence Committees in an open hearing to present the findings.

Rubio emphasized the urgency of addressing the threat posed by Communist China, stating, “Our nation’s greatest adversary is Communist China and the American people must realize the complex reality a new world order, led by Beijing, would pose. Whether it be through economic, social, or military coercion, we are seeing an increased effort from China to displace our nation as the world’s leading power.”

This initiative follows Rubio's co-sponsorship of the “China Exchange Rate Transparency Act” in May, which aims to protect American businesses from China's currency manipulation. This previous bill demands the U.S. Representative for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to ensure stricter scrutiny of China’s financial practices and to factor in these manipulations when determining the value of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) and vote shares at the IMF.

“We cannot allow the Chinese Communist Party to flood the world with artificially cheap goods. That’s why I’m introducing this crucial bill, which would hold the CCP accountable for its currency manipulation at the IMF. It’s our duty to prioritize American workers,” Rubio stated.

U.S. Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN) has introduced companion legislation in the House, reflecting a unified effort in Congress to tackle the CCP's malign influence.

As the 2024 elections approach, Rubio's legislation underscores the critical need to address the threats posed by China and prioritize the security and economic well-being of the United States.
