RFK Jr. Criticizes Biden and DNC for 'Anointing' Kamala Harris
Kennedy Calls for Democratic Process in Selecting 2024 Presidential Candidate.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has publicly challenged the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to reconsider its apparent decision to "anoint" Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate for the 2024 election. Following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will not seek reelection and his subsequent endorsement of Harris, Kennedy took to X to voice his concerns about the DNC's approach.
Kennedy, who initially launched his 2024 presidential campaign as a Democrat, shifted to an independent run after facing significant barriers from the DNC. In his statement, Kennedy emphasized the need for a democratic process to determine the party's nominee.
“I commend President Biden for stepping down. His infirmities were evident to any unbiased observer from the beginning. It was this progressive deterioration — and his abandonment of Democratic Party principles — that prompted me to enter the race and ensure American voters had a viable, vigorous alternative to Donald Trump,” Kennedy stated.
Kennedy argued that the DNC's actions, which led him to run as an independent, could foster distrust among voters toward the party's leadership. He criticized the DNC for attempting to conceal Biden’s declining health and pushing him towards the nomination despite his visible struggles.
“Yet the response of the DNC was to try and hide President Biden’s degeneration from the American public and disable democracy to ram him through to his party’s nomination,” he continued. “Many Americans fear that the same DNC elites are about to rig the nominating process again to get a monumentally unpopular vice president to step into President Biden’s shoes.”
Kennedy urged the Democratic Party to embrace a transparent and democratic approach in selecting its nominee. He proposed that instead of endorsing a candidate chosen by party elites, the DNC should utilize neutral polling to identify the most viable candidate against Donald Trump. Delegates should then select the nominee based on these polling results.
“I call on the Democratic Party to return to its traditional commitment to democracy and exemplify it with an open process,” Kennedy concluded. “Instead of anointing a candidate hand-picked by DNC elites, the party should use neutral polling to identify the candidate who can best beat Donald Trump. The delegates should then select a nominee based on this information. If they had done this to begin with, I would not have had to leave the Democratic Party.”
Kennedy’s challenge comes at a crucial time as the Democratic Party faces internal debates over its future leadership and strategy to counter the Republican candidate in the upcoming election. His call for a more open and democratic selection process resonates with many who are wary of the party's current direction.
