Republicans Surge in Voter Registration Across Key Swing States in September

GOP doubles Democrats' new voter registrations in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, boosting chances in 2024 battlegrounds.

Republicans made significant gains in voter registration across crucial swing states in September, registering nearly twice as many voters as Democrats in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, according to new data from Decision Desk HQ. This surge in GOP voter registrations could be pivotal in the 2024 election, as both states are critical battlegrounds for control of the White House.

In Pennsylvania, Republicans registered nearly 61,000 new voters compared to 36,000 for Democrats, thanks in part to efforts led by conservative activist Scott Presler. Presler has focused heavily on registering previously untapped groups, such as the Amish, in the state. With 87,000 Amish residents in Pennsylvania, many of whom have never voted, this strategy could pay off in a state that could decide the presidency.

Over in North Carolina, Republicans added 19,000 voters to the rolls in September, nearly double the number of Democrats who registered. North Carolina, like Pennsylvania, is considered vital for both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris as they vie for the White House in 2024.

Presler celebrated the achievement on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “WAIT! Are you telling us that Pennsylvania added more Republican voters in the last month than any other state? My heart is singing a tune so loudly, I think the sun, moon, & stars can hear it!”

Key insights from the registration surge:

  • In Pennsylvania, Trump holds a narrow lead over Harris in swing counties like Erie and Northampton, signaling a potential shift from 2020 when Joe Biden narrowly won the state.

  • Republicans outpaced Democrats in voter registrations in other key states, including Florida (where they registered 60,436 new voters compared to 36,116 for Democrats) and Nevada.

  • Even in traditionally blue states like California, New Jersey, and Rhode Island, Republicans edged out Democrats in new voter registrations in September.

Trump’s campaign is riding high on the momentum, with Pennsylvania’s “Bellwether Counties” showing a shift back to the GOP after leaning Democrat in 2020. According to a Cygnal poll, “As Democrats have a 4-point party registration advantage in these counties, this is further evidence of these ancestral Democrats increasingly leaving the party of their forefathers.”

With the 2024 election fast approaching, these registration numbers reflect growing Republican enthusiasm and present a challenge to the Biden-Harris campaign as they work to defend their standing in key battlegrounds.
