Putin Steps Up Attacks Missiles Strike Ukraine, Hit EU & UK Sites

As peace talks stall, Russian strikes kill children, hit EU and UK buildings, and cripple Ukraine’s energy grid.

Vladimir Putin just escalated his war on Ukraine and the West with a massive overnight missile and drone assault that killed at least 18 people, including four children, and damaged European Union and British diplomatic buildings in Kyiv.

The attack, described by Ukrainian officials as one of the most severe in recent months, is being viewed as a direct rejection of recent diplomatic efforts to bring the conflict to an end. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Putin is “choosing ballistics over the negotiating table.”

Here’s what we know:

  • Missiles and drones rained down on 13 Ukrainian locations, targeting both military and civilian infrastructure.

  • Kyiv was hit hardest, with massive explosions across all districts, causing at least 38 injuries and destroying multiple residential buildings.

  • Russian missiles struck near the EU’s mission office and the British Council in Kyiv. While no casualties were reported at those diplomatic sites, the message was clear: Russia is now targeting the West’s presence in Ukraine.

  • A critical rail hub in Vinnytsia was struck, cutting power to 60,000 residents.

  • Ukraine’s energy grid was once again targeted, just as the country braces for a brutal winter.

Zelensky called for new sanctions and broader international support, warning that Russia’s goal remains unchanged to pressure Ukraine into surrendering territory through brute force.

“Putin is killing children and civilians and sabotaging hopes of peace,” said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, condemning the attack on the British Council building.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the assault “another grim reminder of what is at stake,” adding that the EU is preparing a 19th package of sanctions and is advancing efforts to redirect frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s defense.

Despite claims from Moscow that it only targets military infrastructure, the attack once again showed Russia’s indiscriminate violence against civilians. Drones and missiles tore through populated neighborhoods in Kyiv and elsewhere, as Ukraine’s air defenses struggled to intercept the full barrage downing 26 of 31 missiles and 563 of nearly 600 drones.

Meanwhile, in a disturbing show of force in the south, a Ukrainian naval vessel was struck in the Danube River, where Russia used an unmanned speedboat to hit and sink the reconnaissance boat, reportedly killing one person and leaving others wounded or missing.

Why it matters:

  • The Danube port system is vital for Ukraine’s ability to import fuel and supplies, especially with Russian blockades throttling Black Sea access.

  • This attack was not just about Ukraine. Putin hit Western diplomatic property, essentially challenging the EU and UK on their own terms.

  • With winter approaching, Ukrainian officials warn that Russia will intensify attacks on energy infrastructure, raising the stakes for millions of civilians.

Despite Putin’s public statements about pursuing peace, his actions show otherwise. The Kremlin is doubling down on terror tactics to force a political victory it can’t achieve on the battlefield.

The West must respond with more than statements. Sanctions, military aid, and strategic deterrence must increase because Russia has made it clear: this war won’t stop at Ukraine’s borders.
