Putin Residence Drone Attack Dismissed as Fabricated

Expert says Russia's claims defy logic as Moscow scrambles to discredit Ukraine after Trump-Zelenskyy talks.

Russia is once again trying to manipulate global narratives, this time with a far-fetched accusation that Ukraine attempted to assassinate Vladimir Putin using drones a claim experts and even basic logic are tearing to shreds.

The Kremlin announced this week that a drone strike targeting one of Putin’s residences in the Novgorod region was foiled, blaming Ukraine for a “massive” aerial assault. But top defense and drone industry experts say the entire story reeks of political theater.

Cameron Chell, CEO of Draganfly a U.S. Department of Defense drone supplier called the supposed attack “hard to fathom” and “very un-Ukrainian.” His company also works directly with Ukraine’s military, giving him unique insight into their drone capabilities and tactics.

“They’re always incredibly clever about how they use drones,” Chell said. “I find it hard to fathom that this drone attack even happened on Putin’s residence or that it was orchestrated by Ukraine.”

Here’s why the story doesn’t add up:

  • Long-range drone attacks would require close proximity, but security around Putin’s residence makes such a launch nearly impossible without operating from deep inside Russia itself.

  • Ukraine’s drone tactics rely on speed, stealth, and strategic timing, not a dramatic multi-drone swarm during peace talks with the U.S.

  • GPS and AI-guided navigation is easily jammed, especially at night when this alleged attack supposedly occurred.

Even Russia's numbers contradict themselves. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed 91 drones were intercepted, while the Defense Ministry earlier cited 89 drones, and only added the supposed 49 more over Bryansk after Lavrov’s statement a region nearly 300 miles away from the target.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin offered no evidence or wreckage, and when pressed, spokesman Dmitry Peskov vaguely punted the matter to the military. He then lashed out at skeptics, calling Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s denials and Western doubt “completely insane.”

It’s clear who benefits from this narrative and it’s not Ukraine.

The alleged attack comes right after a productive meeting between President Trump and Zelenskyy in Florida, signaling stronger U.S.–Ukraine ties. Chell emphasized that Ukraine has no political motive to provoke Russia at this moment.

“They’re bold, but right in the middle of peace talks when they need Trump on side it makes no sense,” he said.

Let’s also remember that Putin has a long history of false flag operations, manufactured crises, and strategic victimhood to justify aggression. This is the same regime that has denied war crimes while carpet bombing civilians in Ukraine.

Trump, when asked, said Putin personally told him about the incident and expressed anger but also added, “We’ll find out.”

Indeed we will and once again, it looks like Moscow is more interested in fabricating threats than facing its own failures on the world stage.
