Pope Leo Ousts Cardinal Dolan in Major U.S. Church Shake-Up

Conservative voice sidelined as reform-aligned bishop from Illinois takes over powerful New York post.

In a move that is already being viewed as a seismic shake-up in the U.S. Catholic hierarchy, Pope Leo has replaced Cardinal Timothy Dolan as the Archbishop of New York sidelining one of the most prominent conservative voices in the American Church.

The announcement came Thursday from the Vatican, confirming that Bishop Ronald Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, will now lead the second-largest Catholic archdiocese in the United States, home to more than 2.8 million faithful. Hicks, 58, will officially take over on February 6, while Dolan will remain in the role temporarily.

Dolan, who submitted his resignation earlier this year after turning 75 as required by Church law, has been a fearless voice for traditional Catholic values throughout his tenure. From delivering an invocation at President Trump’s second inauguration to calling conservative activist Charlie Kirk “a modern-day St. Paul,” Dolan has never shied away from taking a stand. His weekly show on SiriusXM and regular appearances on “Fox & Friends” helped make him a household name far beyond the pews.

But not everyone appreciated his boldness especially in a Church increasingly moving toward ambiguity, “inclusivity,” and vague spiritual messaging.

“Most Americans may not realize just how important the Archbishop of New York is not just within the Church, but as a public figure,” said one Catholic insider. “This is the Vatican signaling a shift away from clear moral leadership.”

Pope Leo, the first American pope, appears to be shaping the U.S. Church in his own image less outspoken, more aligned with the globalist ideals of late Pope Francis. His decision to replace Dolan with Hicks, a soft-spoken, reformist Midwesterner, reinforces that message.

At a press conference Thursday, Hicks spoke in both English and Spanish, saying he had “a great heart” for the Latino community and highlighting his past missionary work in El Salvador. He also repeated his criticism of Trump’s immigration enforcement policies, aligning himself with the liberal stance of the U.S. bishops’ conference.

  • Hicks previously endorsed opposition to Trump-era border crackdowns, while stressing the need to “uphold human dignity.”

  • He is seen as embracing the reformist agenda of Pope Francis, including a less confrontational, more globalist tone.

  • He has not commented on abortion, transgender ideology, or religious liberty hot-button issues where Dolan took a firm stand.

Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of New York is facing mounting financial pressure, including more than $300 million in anticipated abuse settlements involving roughly 1,300 claims. Cardinal Dolan recently announced a 10% budget cut, staff layoffs, and property sales to meet those obligations.

While the timing of Dolan’s removal is framed as procedural, the politics are impossible to ignore.

“Pope Leo is elevating to the most prominent American see an Illinois native very much like himself,” said David Gibson, director at Fordham University’s Center on Religion and Culture.

The Vatican has not addressed why no more prominent New York-based or East Coast cleric was chosen, despite the significance of the role. Critics argue that installing a relatively unknown bishop from Illinois is more about ideology than qualifications.

This is just the latest example of conservative Catholic leaders being marginalized or removed under a Vatican increasingly focused on political correctness over doctrinal clarity. And it’s a warning sign for faithful Catholics watching their church drift ever closer to globalist agendas and moral relativism.

For now, one thing is clear: Cardinal Dolan’s departure marks the end of an era of bold, unapologetic Catholic leadership in America’s most influential diocese.
