Pelosi Undergoes Hip Replacement After Fall in Luxembourg

Former House Speaker Injured While Honoring WWII Veterans Abroad.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the former Speaker of the House, underwent emergency hip replacement surgery in Europe on Saturday after falling and breaking her hip during a trip to Luxembourg.

Pelosi, 83, was traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge when the accident occurred. According to her office, she fell down the stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace while wearing high heels.

Pelosi’s office released a statement describing the surgery as a “successful hip replacement” and noted that she was already “well on the mend.”

“Pelosi is grateful to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness,” the statement read.

The congresswoman also expressed gratitude for the prayers and support she has received, reaffirming her commitment to “ensure access to quality health care for all Americans.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Pelosi was injured shortly after posing for a group photo with other lawmakers and officials. A photo posted by the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg shows Pelosi clutching the hand of House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) while wearing high heels shortly before her fall.

The former Speaker, who had been scheduled to participate in additional events with the delegation, was forced to withdraw from the remaining engagements.

Pelosi expressed regret at not being able to complete the trip, which was intended to honor American veterans and the sacrifices of U.S. forces during World War II. “She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our service members during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history,” her office stated.

Pelosi also praised the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their role in World War II, emphasizing her personal and official honor in traveling with the delegation. Many members of the delegation had family ties to the war, further underscoring the significance of the trip.

While Pelosi’s injury may have cut her trip short, the former Speaker’s dedication to public service and her resolve in the face of setbacks remain evident. As she recovers, Pelosi’s message of gratitude and her commitment to honoring America’s veterans serve as reminders of the lasting legacy of those who fought for freedom during World War II.
