Pelosi Advises Biden to Engage with ‘Serious Journalists’ Amid Debate Fallout
Former House Speaker Suggests Interviews to Reassure Public Amid Health Concerns.
As President Joe Biden faces mounting health concerns following a lackluster debate performance, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has advised him to participate in interviews with “serious journalists.” Pelosi’s comments come amid growing unease within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s viability as a candidate against former President Donald Trump.
Pelosi, a key Democratic figure, shared her thoughts with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, emphasizing the need for Biden to demonstrate his capabilities to the public. “I think my recommendation is for him to have some interviews with serious journalists, you among them. Serious journalists, no-holds-barred, any question is fair, and just sit there and be Joe,” Pelosi stated.
Pelosi suggested that Biden’s interviews should showcase his values, knowledge, judgment, and empathy for the American people.
Her remarks came shortly before ABC News announced Biden’s first post-debate TV interview with George Stephanopoulos, set for Friday.
The call for Biden to step up his public engagement comes amid increasing pressure from donors and some Democratic members of Congress for him to consider stepping aside. Post-debate polling from CBS News and YouGov indicated that 41% of Democratic registered voters and 72% of registered voters overall doubt the 81-year-old president's mental and cognitive health.
Pelosi acknowledged the unusual nature of the upcoming election, stating that it is a “legitimate question” to ask whether Biden’s debate struggles were a one-time “episode” or indicative of a broader “condition.” She also insisted that Trump should face similar scrutiny.
“It’s going to be up to Joe Biden to do what he thinks is — there’s no more patriotic person in our country than this President of the United States. Nobody less than the former president. Joe Biden — I trust his judgment,” Pelosi added.
Reflecting on her experience, Pelosi expressed confidence in Biden’s ability to continue serving effectively, while admitting she cannot predict future health outcomes. “I think that in my experience, which is what you asked me, I think that he will continue to be a great president,” she concluded.
As the election approaches, Pelosi’s advice highlights the urgency for Biden to reconnect with the electorate and dispel doubts about his fitness for office.
