Olympic Runner Set On Fire by Boyfriend in Vicious Attack
Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei fights for her life after a brutal assault in Kenya.
Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei is in critical condition after being doused in gasoline and set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema. The 33-year-old athlete, who recently competed in the Paris Olympics, sustained burns on over 75% of her body, according to medical reports.
The attack took place at Cheptegei’s home in western Kenya, just across the border from Uganda, on Sunday, September 1. Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom confirmed that the assault followed a domestic dispute, allegedly involving a land disagreement between the couple.
Witnesses reported hearing the couple arguing outside their home before Ndiema poured gasoline on Cheptegei and set her ablaze. Cheptegei had just returned from church with her two children when the confrontation occurred.
A Promising Career Cut Short: Cheptegei’s athletic accomplishments include competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she finished 44th in the marathon. She had also won gold at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand, a testament to her talent and perseverance.
Violence Unfolds: According to police reports, Ndiema snuck into the property while Cheptegei and her children were at church. Armed with gasoline, he allegedly waited for her return, initiating the horrific attack. Neighbors intervened, rescuing both Cheptegei and Ndiema, who also sustained injuries. The two were rushed to Kitale County Referral Hospital for treatment.
A Dispute Over Land: The tragic incident appears to have been rooted in a land dispute. Cheptegei’s parents revealed that she had recently bought the property and built a home near training facilities to support her athletic career. Kosiom stated, "The couple were heard quarreling, and during the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her."
Ndiema is currently under police custody while receiving treatment for his injuries. Meanwhile, Cheptegei remains in critical condition, with the world watching and hoping for her recovery.
This tragic act of domestic violence has shocked both the athletic community and the public at large. Cheptegei, a rising star, now faces a life-threatening situation instead of preparing for future competitions. As more details emerge, the case underscores the brutal reality of domestic violence and the need for swift justice.
