Ohio Attorney General Addresses Influx of Haitian Migrants Overwhelming Town
Dave Yost pushes back against Biden-Harris administration’s migrant policies as local residents fear for their safety.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is stepping in as Springfield, a town of less than 60,000 residents, is being overwhelmed by the arrival of tens of thousands of Haitian migrants. The influx, which has brought in approximately 20,000 Haitian illegal aliens over the last few years, has strained local resources and left residents frustrated and fearful.
Yost announced this week that his office is reviewing options to challenge the Biden-Harris administration’s policies, which have allowed large numbers of migrants to be sent to small communities like Springfield with little federal support. “This is absurd—Springfield has swollen by more than a third due to migrants,” Yost stated, adding, “How many people can they be expected to take? What are the limits to the federal government’s power?”
His office has made it clear: “The problem is not migrants, it is way, way too many migrants in a short period of time.” The rapid surge has led to devastating effects on local public and private services, with authorities and residents alike struggling to manage the fallout. Yost also expressed concerns about the lack of communication and assistance from the federal government, leaving towns like Springfield to fend for themselves.
Here’s what’s happening in Springfield:
Crime and safety concerns: Local residents have reported an increase in criminal activity, with migrants allegedly involved in car crashes, property theft, squatting, and killing wildlife for food. Complaints have poured in about how unsafe the town has become.
Overwhelmed infrastructure: The sudden influx has overburdened local systems, from housing to law enforcement, and stretched resources thin.
Community backlash: At a recent city council meeting, frustrated citizens voiced their fears. One resident described the chaos in stark terms, “These Haitians are running into trash cans. They’re running into buildings. They’re flipping cars in the middle of the street.”
Yost has been clear in his criticism of the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies, which he blames for the chaos unfolding in Springfield. “Ohio is a great place to work and live,” Yost said, “But overwhelming our small towns with massive migrant populations without any coordination or assistance from the federal government is changing that in front of our eyes.”
The Attorney General plans to take legal action to bring the issue before a federal judge, calling for a “limiting principle” on the federal government’s ability to funnel migrants into small communities.
Residents are demanding answers and protection. One Springfield woman said, “It is so unsafe... I don’t understand what you expect of us as citizens. … Who’s protecting me?” She echoed the sentiments of many, asking for a reason to stay in a town that feels increasingly unrecognizable.
As this crisis continues to unfold, it’s clear that the policies coming out of Washington are having direct, negative impacts on small American towns. Without federal support or coordination, places like Springfield are left to bear the brunt of a migration crisis that shows no signs of slowing.
