Advisor to Obama and Harris Deletes Twitter Post-Harris Win Prediction and Biden Remark
David Plouffe’s predictions collapse as Trump sweeps battleground states
David Plouffe, the former political advisor to both President Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris, disappeared from social media in the wake of his bold and ultimately flawed election predictions. Just hours after forecasting a sweeping victory for Harris, Plouffe deleted his account on X (formerly Twitter) following Donald Trump’s decisive win across all seven key battleground states.
In a post before deactivating his account, Plouffe acknowledged the hard-fought campaign, writing, “It was a privilege to spend the last 100 days with @KamalaHarris and the amazing staff. We dug out of a deep hole but not enough. A devastating loss.” He went on to thank Harris’s team for their efforts, a sentiment soon buried as his entire account vanished from the platform.
A Failed Prediction of Battleground Wins
On the eve of Election Day, Plouffe had confidently told CNN that Harris was positioned to win all seven battleground states: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. “We’re feeling good about our chances,” he stated, claiming undecided voters were breaking for Harris and that they had a “credible pathway” in all seven states. But by the end of the night, it was Trump who swept these critical states, dealing a devastating blow to the Harris campaign and leaving Plouffe’s confident predictions in shambles.
Blame Game Within the Democratic Party
Following Trump’s stunning victory, tensions simmered within Democratic ranks, with advisors and aides pointing fingers. One campaign insider, speaking to POLITICO, cited Biden himself as the “singular reason” Harris and the Democrats failed. This perspective underscores growing frustration within the party over Biden’s influence on Harris’s campaign, especially as concerns over Biden’s performance and policies appeared to weigh heavily on Democratic candidates.
Plouffe’s remarks hinting that the Democrats were fighting an uphill battle, compounded by his veiled critique of Biden, reportedly did not sit well with Biden’s allies. A source close to Biden shot back, pointing out that the president managed to beat Trump once without Plouffe’s assistance, adding that Plouffe’s post was nothing more than a “sanctimonious” dig and an “unproductive” vent on social media.
The Strain of the 2024 Campaign
Plouffe, known for his instrumental role in managing Obama’s 2008 campaign, seemed to have staked much of his confidence on Harris’s ability to replicate past Democratic success. But Harris’s lack of traction with voters even after a billion-dollar ad blitz showed the limits of his influence. His prediction that Harris was “closing strong” in Pennsylvania and other battlegrounds proved wildly off the mark, and Trump’s sweeping victory sent a clear signal that the Democratic playbook would need a serious overhaul.
In a brief statement to the press, a spokesperson for Plouffe explained his exit from social media as a “reimmersion into life” after the campaign. While Plouffe steps back, Democrats face a daunting challenge in determining what went wrong and in confronting the lingering divisions within their party.
The postmortem on the 2024 election suggests that Democratic leaders may need to reevaluate their core strategies if they hope to regain the trust of voters who turned out overwhelmingly for Trump. Plouffe’s ill-timed predictions and public critiques might just be the tip of the iceberg for a party struggling to reconcile its internal conflicts.
