North Carolina Residents Ask Trump to Stop Race-Based Hurricane Relief

Democrat officials prioritized aid based on skin color, sparking legal complaints.

Residents of Buncombe County, North Carolina, are asking the Trump administration to intervene after local officials prioritized Hurricane Helene relief funds based on race and sex, openly discriminating against white business owners.

The Western North Carolina Citizens for Equality filed a civil rights complaint with the Treasury Department, arguing that the county’s relief program violates federal law by using repurposed COVID relief funds to favor “BIPOC” and women-owned businesses while excluding others.

The Democrat-controlled Buncombe County Board of Commissioners launched the small business relief grant in November, explicitly stating that aid would be focused on “businesses owned by people of color” and “women-owned businesses”.

  • The county partnered with Mountain Bizworks, a leftist non-profit that openly states its mission is to promote “racial equity” in business funding.

  • The application process required applicants to disclose their race and sex, which were used as factors in deciding who received financial relief.

  • Statistics confirm the discrimination: Despite the county being nearly 90% white, only 28.5% of grants went to minority-owned businesses, while an overwhelming 60.6% were given to women-owned businesses.

Carl Mumpower, president of WNC Citizens for Equality, blasted the illegal policy:

“There is no doubt that Buncombe County intended to discriminate against white business owners in its Helene Relief Project.”

Mumpower, who filed the January 22 complaint, pointed out that not only does this violate federal anti-discrimination laws, but it also contradicts Buncombe County’s own ordinances, which prohibit government discrimination based on race or sex.

He noted that Asheville, a far-left city that overwhelmingly voted for Kamala Harris, has refused to acknowledge the issue.

“Local Democrats are ruthless in their willingness to ignore the law and believe they can get away with anything.”

President Donald Trump has already slammed the federal and local response to Hurricane Helene, saying North Carolinians were “treated very badly by Democrats.” He has also suggested overhauling FEMA, arguing that states should take more control over disaster relief to prevent corruption and political favoritism.

With Biden’s DOJ unlikely to act, North Carolina residents are now counting on Trump to step in and stop this blatant discrimination.
