NFL Team Criticized for Mentioning Islamophobia on Anniversary of Hamas Attack

The Minnesota Vikings face backlash for what many see as a tone-deaf response to the worst anti-Semitic attack since the Holocaust.

The Minnesota Vikings are facing widespread backlash after a social media post on the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel sparked outrage. The attack, which claimed the lives of 1,200 people, was the deadliest against Jews since the Holocaust. Yet, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Vikings chose to address both rising antisemitism and Islamophobia, drawing criticism for what many see as an inappropriate and tone-deaf message.

The post, which has garnered over 1.6 million views, reads: “Today as we remember the one-year anniversary of the reprehensible attacks on Israel, we mourn the loss of all innocent lives from this ongoing conflict. We stand against the rising antisemitism and Islamophobia and know we must steadfastly work towards combating hate in all forms.”

While the team expressed solidarity with the 101 hostages who have yet to be freed, the inclusion of Islamophobia in the context of an anti-Semitic massacre has sparked outrage across social media.

Here’s what people are saying:

  • “Why would you throw in the word Islamophobia in a statement on the worst antisemitic attack since the Holocaust? No really. Where does it fit?” one user questioned, echoing the sentiments of many.

  • Others pointed out the timing of the post, with another writing, “This post is awfully tone-deaf to actual issues that are directly affecting your country and your audience,” referencing the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which has devastated parts of the southeastern U.S.

The statement has also been criticized for seemingly pandering to Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar’s base. Omar, a highly controversial figure in U.S. politics, has a history of vocal criticism toward Israel, which has fueled further debate about the team’s messaging. Omar has consistently drawn fire for her stance on Israel, including her attacks on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this year.

The situation for the hostages taken by Hamas on that fateful day remains dire. Of the 251 people kidnapped, officials say 64 are still being held alive, while 33 are known to be deceased. The rest have either been rescued, released, or their bodies recovered.

In the end, while the Vikings’ attempt to address broader issues may have been well-intentioned, many feel it missed the mark, diluting the significance of remembering the worst anti-Semitic attack in modern times.
