NFL Star Criticizes USA Gymnasts for Bowing to Brazilian Competitor
Marlon Humphrey Condemns Gesture of Sportsmanship at Olympic Podium.
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey expressed outrage when U.S. gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles bowed to Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade on the Olympic podium. Andrade secured the gold medal in women's floor exercise on Monday, while Biles and Chiles took silver and bronze, respectively.
The gesture of bowing, captured in a photo that quickly went viral, was criticized by Humphrey, who tweeted, "This is literally disgusting."
Simone Biles defended the bow as an act of sportsmanship. “I think it’s all about sportsmanship, and we don’t care whether we win or lose. We’re always going to keep a good face and support our competitors because they’ve worked just as hard as we have for that moment,” Biles explained on TODAY.
Biles continued, “So you have to give them their flowers. And that’s exactly what me and Jordan were doing, and we were so happy for her. She deserved it. She had the best floor routine of the day and in the Olympics. So it’s like, yeah, she deserved it.”
Jordan Chiles shared that the idea to bow to Andrade was hers, emphasizing the significance of the moment, which she described as a “black podium.” Chiles said, “Rebeca has done a lot within her sport, within her country. So I felt like not only was it a black podium, I felt like people should get recognized the proper way, and bowing down to her was like giving her that recognition that she really deserved that medal.”
The controversy stirred by Humphrey’s comment highlights a broader cultural discussion about sportsmanship and recognition in competitive sports. Biles's gesture of acknowledging her fellow competitor's achievements is a testament to her character and dedication to the spirit of the Olympics.
In a separate discussion, Biles recently made headlines after responding to an X user who highlighted her success at the Paris Olympics. The user wrote, “Simone Biles being the GOAT, winning Gold medals and dominating gymnastics is her black job.” Biles replied, “I love my black job,” accompanied by a black heart emoji.
This exchange was seen in light of former President Donald Trump’s comments about “black jobs” in a speech about immigration and employment. Trump argued that jobs held by illegal immigrants could otherwise be filled by struggling Americans, specifically citing black Americans. While the media and Democrats focused on Trump’s choice of words, Trump emphasized the impact of open border policies on American employment.
The bowing controversy underscores the complex interplay of sportsmanship, cultural identity, and public perception, with Biles and Chiles embodying the spirit of global competition and mutual respect. As debates over sportsmanship and political rhetoric continue, the focus remains on celebrating athletic excellence and the diverse backgrounds of athletes worldwide.
