Massive Wildfire Forces Thousands to Evacuate in New Jersey

Over 3,200 acres scorched as power outages spread and flames threaten more than 1,000 structures.

A massive wildfire ripped through Ocean County, New Jersey, on Tuesday, prompting emergency evacuations of over 3,000 residents and leaving tens of thousands without power as the blaze spread uncontrollably through forested areas.

Dubbed the Jones Road Forest Fire, the inferno had devoured 3,200 acres by Tuesday evening and was only 5% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The fire has threatened more than 1,300 structures, including homes and an industrial complex in Lacey Township, which was at the heart of the evacuation zone.

The flames, fanned by 25 mph wind gusts and fueled by dry conditions and drought, have knocked out power to over 23,000 customers, utility company JCP&L confirmed. State officials warn the fire may continue to spread unless containment lines are strengthened.

  • New Jersey averages 1,500 wildfires per year, which damage or destroy up to 7,000 acres, according to state officials.

  • Over half the state is currently under a high fire risk, worsened by drought conditions in southern counties like Ocean.

  • Local videos show flames towering over buildings, with emergency crews scrambling to prevent structural losses and protect neighborhoods.

Firefighters from across the region, including Forest Fire Service bulldozers, engines, and ground crews, have joined with local fire and rescue teams in a round-the-clock battle to contain the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but with New Jersey’s parched landscape, any small spark can quickly escalate into a large-scale disaster.

Eyewitness videos captured the intensity of the situation, with some residents reporting that flames were visible from their backyards and evacuation orders came with little warning. The industrial complex in Lacey Township appeared surrounded by fire in one widely shared clip, highlighting the speed and unpredictability of the fire’s spread.

This latest incident underscores a growing problem not limited to the West Coast wildfire threats are becoming a nationwide crisis, and states like New Jersey are woefully unprepared.

With left-wing environmental policies tying the hands of forest management agencies and years of neglecting controlled burns or proper forestry upkeep, the result is increasingly volatile fire seasons, even in places where fires were once rare.

For now, residents wait anxiously as crews try to stop the inferno from reaching homes and businesses. No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far, but authorities warn that may change if conditions worsen overnight.
