11 Members of North Carolina Family Killed in Hurricane Helene Mudslide

Tragedy strikes as catastrophic flooding claims lives, leaving a community shattered.

A devastating mudslide triggered by Hurricane Helene has claimed the lives of 11 members of a well-known North Carolina family, leaving the Fairview community heartbroken. The Craig family, who had deep roots in the area dating back to the 1950s, saw their lives forever altered when the storm's relentless flooding caused a deadly landslide, wiping out several neighboring homes affectionately known as "Craigtown."

The Craig family’s tight-knit bond, built over generations, was torn apart as floodwaters overtook their homes, located directly in the mudslide’s path. Jesse Craig, a surviving family member, expressed his unimaginable grief:

"My mother and father, my aunt and uncle, my great aunt and uncle I’ve lost cousins, second cousins, things like that, but 11 people overall from this mudslide."

Jesse’s grandfather was the first to settle in Fairview in the 1950s, and the family’s presence has been a cornerstone of the local community ever since. Now, Fairview faces a grim future without some of its most cherished residents.

Jesse’s wife, MeKenzie Craig, echoed the overwhelming sense of loss:

"We’ll never make sense of it. You know, it’s our community and our town. I don’t I don’t know that it’ll ever be the same."

  • 72 people in Buncombe County, where Fairview is located, lost their lives to the storm.

  • Over 230 fatalities have been reported across the Southeast in Hurricane Helene’s wake.

  • Authorities are still searching for missing individuals in North Carolina, but the exact number of those unaccounted for remains uncertain.

As the Craig family struggles to cope with their loss, the community has rallied to support them. A GoFundMe campaign has raised $127,748 to assist the family with funeral costs, medical bills, and the daunting task of rebuilding their lives.

Despite the outpouring of support, it’s clear that Fairview will never be the same. The Craig family's loss is a tragic reminder of the deadly consequences of weak leadership and poor disaster preparedness under the current administration. From coast to coast, Americans continue to suffer from incompetence at the highest levels, with communities left to fend for themselves in the aftermath of disasters like Hurricane Helene.

As we approach the 2024 election, it’s clear that this country needs stronger leadership someone who can protect families and prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
