NATO Chief Tells Europe To Stop Complaining And Start Defending Itself

Mark Rutte makes it clear that President Trump’s demands for stronger defense spending are being heard.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has a blunt message for European leaders: stop whining and start acting. In a Monday interview with Fox News, Rutte acknowledged that President Donald Trump’s demand for increased European defense spending has finally been taken seriously, as NATO allies recognize the need to strengthen their military capabilities.

For years, the U.S. has carried an unfair share of NATO’s defense burden, while European nations failed to meet their commitments. Trump exposed this imbalance, pushing NATO members to contribute more rather than rely on American taxpayers.

  • Under Trump’s pressure, NATO countries increased their defense spending by $700 billion, a massive step, but still not enough.

  • Rutte admitted that even more spending is needed, particularly in long-range missiles, logistics, air defense, and military mobility.

  • European leaders initially resisted Trump’s push, complaining about their lack of involvement in key decisions until they realized they had no choice but to step up.

Rutte made it clear that the days of European nations free-riding on U.S. military strength must come to an end. “Get your act together,” he said, emphasizing that NATO must take greater responsibility for its own security, especially with threats from Russia and China growing.

This marks a major shift from the weak, passive stance European leaders took under Biden. While Biden’s foreign policy left America’s allies uncertain and vulnerable, Trump’s leadership has forced NATO to wake up and start preparing for real threats.

Trump’s America First policy isn’t about abandoning NATO it’s about ensuring fairness and stability. A stronger, self-sufficient NATO means:

  • Less burden on American taxpayers, who have been funding Europe’s defense for decades.

  • Greater deterrence against adversaries like Russia and China, who have taken advantage of Western weakness.

  • A more unified alliance, built on strength rather than dependence on the U.S.

With Trump back in charge, NATO is finally recognizing the reality: America is still the most important ally, but it won’t be Europe’s personal security bank. It’s time for them to take their defense seriously.
