NATO Chief Confirms Iran Was Close To Nuclear Weapon
Mark Rutte backs U.S. intelligence assessments as global leaders support action to dismantle Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

For years, Washington warned that Iran’s nuclear ambitions were nearing a dangerous tipping point. Now, one of the world’s top security officials says those warnings were not exaggerated.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that U.S. intelligence showing Iran was on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon was accurate underscoring the gravity of the threat and the urgency behind recent military actions targeting the regime’s nuclear and missile capabilities.
Speaking about the escalating confrontation with Iran, Rutte made it clear that the stakes extend far beyond the Middle East.
“Iran is close to getting its hands on a nuclear capability and a ballistic missile capability,” Rutte said. “This is a threat not only to the region and Israel, but also a new threat to us here in Europe.”
His remarks echo longstanding concerns from American intelligence agencies and U.S. allies who have warned for years that Iran’s nuclear program was rapidly advancing despite diplomatic efforts and sanctions.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran has enriched uranium to levels approaching weapons-grade purity something that dramatically shortens the timeline for building a nuclear weapon. Experts estimate that once uranium reaches 90% enrichment, a functioning weapon could potentially be assembled within months.
Recent operations aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs have therefore been seen by many Western leaders as a necessary step to prevent a dangerous new nuclear power from emerging in the region.
Rutte went even further, suggesting that the removal of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could dramatically change the trajectory of the regime.
“The fact that Khamenei is now gone who is responsible for thousands, potentially 10,000 deaths this year alone under the Iranian regime is something the world is better off without,” he said.
Iran has faced growing unrest internally as well. Anti-regime protests erupted across the country earlier this year, driven by economic collapse, corruption, and brutal crackdowns by government security forces. Iran’s inflation rate has hovered near 40% in recent years, while youth unemployment remains among the highest in the region fueling widespread anger toward the ruling clerical establishment.
Despite the regime’s instability, its nuclear ambitions remained a top global concern.
• Iran possesses one of the largest ballistic missile arsenals in the Middle East.
• Intelligence analysts estimate the country could produce enough fissile material for multiple nuclear weapons if enrichment continues unchecked.
• Tehran has already developed missiles capable of reaching Israel and parts of Europe.
Those realities explain why many NATO leaders are quietly supporting efforts to dismantle Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
During an appearance on Fox & Friends, Rutte praised the leadership behind the current operation and emphasized the broader alliance backing behind it.
He specifically commended President Donald J. Trump for targeting the regime’s most dangerous capabilities.
“I really commend what is happening here,” Rutte said. “Taking out the nuclear capability in Iran and the ballistic missile program is crucial.”
According to Rutte, European leaders he spoke with over the weekend expressed strong support for the mission, particularly when it comes to logistical assistance and protecting U.S. interests across the region.
That level of alignment between Washington and European capitals marks a significant shift from the divisions seen during previous debates over Iran policy. A decade ago, the Obama-era nuclear deal divided Western leaders, with critics warning it merely delayed Iran’s nuclear timeline while empowering the regime financially.
Today, the strategic consensus appears far clearer.
Preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power remains one of the most pressing national security priorities for the United States, Israel, and NATO allies alike. With the regime’s nuclear program now under direct pressure, global leaders are watching closely to see whether the threat can finally be dismantled.
