Musk Endorses AfD as Germany Grapples with Christmas Terror Attack
Elon Musk calls Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany party “the only hope” amid immigration backlash.
Elon Musk has publicly thrown his support behind Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party following a deadly Christmas market attack in Magdeburg that left at least five people dead and dozens injured. The suspect, a Saudi immigrant who arrived in Germany in 2006, has reignited fierce debate over immigration policies and national security across the country.
Musk took to his platform on X (formerly Twitter) to endorse the AfD, describing the party as “the only hope for Germany” and criticizing the German government’s lenient approach to immigration.
“[The suspect] was obviously a lunatic who should never have been allowed to enter Germany and should have been extradited when Saudi Arabia made the request,” Musk posted. He further condemned Germany’s policies as “suicidal empathy” that endanger public safety.
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel echoed Musk’s sentiment, blasting the government’s immigration failures in a post on X: “When will this madness end?”
The Alternative for Germany party, often labeled “far-right” by critics, has seen a surge in popularity by advocating for stricter immigration controls and challenging the country’s progressive establishment. AfD’s platform includes:
Tightened Immigration Restrictions: Proposals to stem the flow of migrants and enforce stricter vetting.
Economic Reforms: Calls for lower taxes and severing ties with the European Union.
Cultural Preservation: Protection of free speech and criticism of government policies.
Weidel, the party’s chancellor nominee, represents a unique figure in German politics. An economist with a background at Goldman Sachs and the Bank of China, she has drawn inspiration from Margaret Thatcher. Notably, Weidel is in a same-sex relationship with a Sri Lankan national, challenging stereotypes about AfD’s leadership.
Weidel expressed gratitude for Musk’s support, posting a video to X in which she praised him and extended well-wishes to President Donald Trump and the American people.
The Christmas market attack has further divided German society. Reports indicate the suspect is a Saudi immigrant whose social media posts portray conflicting ideologies, from atheism to radical Islam. Witness video from his arrest captures someone yelling “Allahu Akbar,” though it is unclear if the suspect himself made the statement.
Critics of Germany’s immigration policy argue that such attacks are preventable and highlight systemic failures in screening and deportation processes. The attack has spurred heightened scrutiny of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government and renewed calls for reform.
Musk’s endorsement of AfD comes as the party gains traction among Germans frustrated with lax immigration policies and rising security concerns. Whether this marks a shift in Germany’s political landscape remains to be seen, but the attack and its fallout underscore the growing tensions between the government’s progressive policies and the public’s demand for safety and accountability.
