Senator Mullin Demands Investigation Into Afghanistan Withdrawal
Calls for accountability over alleged “criminal” actions by the Biden administration during chaotic exit.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) has called for an investigation into alleged “criminal” actions stemming from the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, Mullin criticized the administration for its handling of the withdrawal and claimed there were deliberate orders to obstruct rescue efforts for stranded Americans.
Mullin’s remarks come as scrutiny of Biden’s foreign policy decisions continues to mount, with Republicans preparing to hold the administration accountable when President-elect Donald Trump assumes office.
Mullin shared his personal experience during the chaotic withdrawal, accusing Ambassador John Pommersheim, stationed in Tajikistan, of refusing assistance to evacuation efforts under orders from Washington, D.C.
Ambassador Pommersheim was allegedly ordered by the State Department not to assist Mullin’s group in rescuing Americans.
Mullin’s team was physically pulling Americans across the Panjshir bridge into Tajikistan but was denied support.
Mullin described these orders as criminal and called for an investigation into who issued them.
“Who gave him that order that he wasn’t supposed to help me, as a member of Congress at the time, trying to get Americans out?” Mullin asked. “That’s a criminal charge that should be investigated.”
Mullin also criticized the Biden administration’s alleged weaponization of the Department of Justice (DOJ) against political opponents, drawing a sharp contrast with how he claims Trump handled similar situations during his first term. “As far as weaponizing the DOJ and going after political opponents, the only party that’s ever done that is the Democrat Party,” Mullin said.
Mullin’s comments point to a broader concern among Republicans that Biden’s blanket pardons and avoidance of accountability signal deeper issues within his administration.
With the incoming Trump administration and a Republican-controlled House poised to take action, calls for investigations into the Afghanistan withdrawal are likely to gain traction. From abandoning Americans and allies to the loss of billions in military equipment to the Taliban, the withdrawal remains one of the most criticized aspects of Biden’s presidency.
Mullin’s demand for accountability underscores a broader Republican effort to expose what they view as the administration’s failures. Whether these allegations result in formal investigations or legal actions remains to be seen, but the pressure to address the chaos in Afghanistan will undoubtedly intensify in the months ahead.
