MTG Says NPR Could Face Budget Scrutiny Under Trump’s DOGE
Greene targets taxpayer-funded programs as wasteful spending review looms.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) suggested that National Public Radio (NPR) and other government-funded media outlets might face serious scrutiny under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), President-elect Donald Trump’s initiative to eliminate wasteful government spending. Greene, who heads a new House Oversight subcommittee working with DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, made the remarks during an interview on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures.
Greene singled out NPR, accusing it of being a mouthpiece for Democratic propaganda while receiving federal funding. “We will be looking at everything from government-funded media programs like NPR that spread nothing but Democrat propaganda,” Greene stated.
NPR’s funding, while often claimed to be minimal, remains a contentious issue. The network receives less than 1% of its $300 million annual budget from the federally funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting. However, NPR has admitted on its website that federal funding is “essential,” suggesting that its operations, particularly in rural and economically distressed communities, could be jeopardized without taxpayer support.
This isn’t the first time NPR has been in Trump’s crosshairs. During his first term, Trump proposed cutting funding to public media, but Congress didn’t act on it. Earlier this year, while on the campaign trail, Trump blasted NPR on Truth Social after an editor admitted the network lacked Republican voices and promoted left-wing bias.
“NO MORE FUNDING FOR NPR, A TOTAL SCAM!” Trump posted. “THEY ARE A LIBERAL DISINFORMATION MACHINE. NOT ONE DOLLAR!!!”
Greene’s oversight efforts won’t stop at NPR. She signaled plans to review federal grants funding projects like “sex apps in Malaysia” and “toilets in Africa,” which she criticized as out-of-touch with the priorities of American taxpayers. She also pointed to the Pentagon’s repeated audit failures, questioning how billions of dollars go unaccounted for annually.
Further, Greene called out sanctuary states and cities for their policies protecting illegal immigrants while continuing to demand federal dollars. “Why should they get a single dime of taxpayer money if they’re harboring illegal criminal aliens?” she asked.
DOGE, under Trump’s direction and guided by innovators like Musk and Ramaswamy, aims to overhaul government spending, targeting inefficiencies and programs that fail to serve the American people. Greene’s no-nonsense approach aligns with this mission, as she promised to investigate every taxpayer-funded program, regardless of political sensitivities.
“We’re going to look in every single aspect,” Greene declared. “We don’t care about people’s feelings. We’re going to be searching for the facts.”
As Greene and DOGE take the reins, NPR and similar entities may face their toughest fiscal reckoning yet, potentially marking a new era of accountability in Washington.
