Miyares Says Jay Jones ‘Wouldn’t Pass a Background Check’ After Explosive Debate

Virginia AG race tightens as Democrat opponent faces backlash over vile texts, reckless driving, and political privilege.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares pulled no punches Thursday night, tearing into his Democrat challenger Jay Jones during and after their fiery debate and delivering a scathing post-debate message on national television.

“If Jay Jones was applying to be a line prosecutor in my attorney general’s office in fact, in any AG’s office in all 50 states he wouldn’t pass the background check for the job,” Miyares said on Fox News’ America Reports.

The comment followed a devastating exchange on the debate stage, where Miyares confronted Jones over a series of unhinged and hateful text messages sent in 2022.

Here’s what Jay Jones wrote:

  • Wished death on former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert

  • Claimed Gilbert and his wife were “breeding little fascists”

  • Said he would like to “piss” on Republican graves

Jones tried to walk back the messages with a half-hearted apology: “I’m ashamed, I’m embarrassed, and I’m sorry,” he said.

Miyares wasn’t buying it. “If you were truly sorry,” he fired back, “you wouldn’t be running for attorney general.”

But it doesn’t stop with disgusting rhetoric.

Miyares also pointed to Jones’ 2022 reckless driving conviction, when the Democrat was caught speeding at 116 mph in a 70 mph zone a potentially deadly offense. And yet, Jones got off easy.

“There were four people in court that day, all going around the same speed,” Miyares said. “Three of those four people got active or suspended jail time. The only person that didn’t was Jay Jones because he’s a politician.”

Even more outrageous? Jones allegedly completed his court-ordered community service hours by working for his own political action committee not a charity, not a nonprofit, but his own political machine.

A 7News investigation reviewed multiple reckless driving cases and found that in nearly every similar situation, offenders received steeper penalties, including jail time and suspended licenses.

This is a pattern of privilege, entitlement, and arrogance.

It’s no surprise that after the text scandal broke, Jones’ lead in the AG race evaporated. According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, Miyares now leads by 0.3%, a significant swing in a race that just weeks ago looked like a Democrat lock.

Even Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger is feeling the fallout. Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears released a brutal campaign ad showing Spanberger dodging questions about Jones’ vile remarks a reminder of how deep the rot runs inside Virginia’s Democratic machine.

Let’s be real: if a Republican had written those texts, the media would be in full meltdown mode and Democrats would be calling for lifetime bans from public life. But because it’s one of their own, the ruling class shrugs it off until now.

Jason Miyares is doing what any real prosecutor should do: expose corruption, hold bad actors accountable, and restore integrity to the justice system. Virginians deserve an attorney general who follows the law not someone who abuses it for personal gain.
