Milei to Expose Swiss Banks’ Role in Helping Nazis Escape
Argentina’s conservative leader takes historic step toward transparency.

In a bold move for historical justice, Argentina’s conservative President Javier Milei has agreed to unseal long-hidden records exposing how Credit Suisse and its predecessor banks aided escaping Nazis after World War II. This decision could finally shine a light on decades of secrecy surrounding Switzerland’s role in helping war criminals evade justice.
The initiative was prompted by Iowa GOP Sen. Charles Grassley, who has been investigating Credit Suisse’s connections to Nazi fugitives. In a February letter to Milei, Grassley urged the Argentinian leader to unseal the records, writing, “I continue to fight to shine light on the wrongs and injustices from this darkest chapter in history.” His efforts are part of a broader mission to track the Nazis’ widespread confiscation of Jewish assets and ensure accountability.
Former U.S. Inspector General Neil Barofsky was tasked with investigating Credit Suisse’s Nazi ties but was fired when the bank felt he had gone too far. He was reinstated in 2023 after UBS took over Credit Suisse.
Barofsky’s findings revealed a “significant connection” between Credit Suisse and key individuals who facilitated Nazi escapes through financial and logistical networks known as “ratlines.”
Swiss bankers not only turned a blind eye to Nazis stealing Jewish assets but later blocked families’ efforts to reclaim their money.
Despite years of cover-ups, Barofsky’s 2024 testimony before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee confirmed that UBS had fully opened its archives, revealing what two independent panels have described as a systemic pattern of Swiss banks enabling Nazi war criminals.
Grassley emphasized that this investigation is about justice and transparency, ensuring future generations understand the full scope of these historical wrongs. “Regardless of how much time passes, the truth is worth pursuing,” he stated, adding that his work honors the sacrifices of American soldiers who fought to defeat Hitler and liberate Jewish prisoners from Nazi horrors.
Milei’s decision to cooperate marks a significant departure from Argentina’s historical reluctance to address its Nazi-era past. By exposing these financial ties, his administration is taking a decisive stand for historical truth and accountability.
