Milei Announces Policy Prohibiting Men in Women’s Correctional Facilities
Argentina’s new president vows to end policies he calls “absurd” and restore justice in the prison system.
Argentinian President Javier Milei is making waves again, this time taking aim at controversial prison policies that allow male prisoners to be housed in women’s facilities by claiming a change in gender identity. Milei announced on Tuesday his intent to ban the practice nationwide, denouncing it as a ploy used by criminals to exploit the system and abuse female inmates.
“Recently, we’ve seen cases of criminals using the gender identity law to claim they’re women who should be in women’s prisons,” Milei said. “They do this to exploit female inmates or continue their business in more relaxed conditions. Just last week, we learned that the Moros gang leader filed 10 habeas corpus to change his gender and receive male visitors. Only in a country with deeply distorted values could such absurdity be allowed.”
Milei vowed swift action to end what he called a “nonsense policy” that prioritizes criminal schemes over the safety of victims and inmates.
Milei’s plan includes:
Banning gender-based prison transfers: Male prisoners will no longer be allowed to claim gender identity changes to move to women’s facilities.
Expanding the policy to provincial prisons: Milei aims to make this ban a nationwide standard, pushing provinces to adopt similar rules.
Sanctioning non-compliance: Prisons that fail to implement these changes will be held accountable for encouraging criminal manipulation.
“These policies only reward criminal creativity and disrespect crime victims,” Milei said.
This announcement is just the latest move by Milei as he aggressively tackles Argentina’s systemic issues. Earlier this year, he proposed selling prisons in residential areas to real estate developers and using the funds to construct modern, secure facilities outside city limits. This initiative, he argued, would improve prison conditions without burdening taxpayers.
The economic impacts of Milei’s reforms have also been profound. Argentina’s stock market saw a surge in investor confidence after his administration began implementing policies to stabilize the nation’s economy. According to Yahoo Finance, an exchange-traded fund tracking Argentine stocks saw assets jump from $104 million to $750 million within weeks of Milei taking office, reflecting optimism about his ability to deliver results.
“Milei hasn’t just talked the talk, but is actually walking the walk,” said Malcolm Dorson, senior portfolio manager at Global X Management. Under Milei’s leadership:
Inflation is declining.
Budget deficits have turned into fiscal surpluses.
Economic activity is showing signs of revival.
Milei’s firm stance on criminal justice and his ambitious economic reforms signal a transformative era for Argentina. By addressing what he views as deeply flawed policies, Milei continues to position himself as a president committed to restoring order and accountability in the country.
