Mike Johnson to Run Again for Speaker as GOP Gears Up for "Biggest Offense"
The Republicans' plan to reclaim America’s future is taking shape in the House.
Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) has launched his bid to retain the position of Speaker of the House, setting the stage for what he calls the “biggest offense of our lives.” With Republicans expected to hold the House and reclaim the Senate and White House, Johnson aims to lead a Congress that will decisively reshape America’s future.
On Wednesday, Johnson wrote to his GOP colleagues, asking for their endorsement when the House convenes for a new session in January. “I’m ready to take the field with all of you, and I am humbly asking for your support to continue leading this Conference as your Speaker,” he declared in the letter. “It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve with you thus far, and I look forward to playing the biggest offense of our lives. We have a country to save and we will.”
Johnson assumed the Speaker’s gavel in October 2023, following the ousting of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in a dramatic series of votes. Despite a Democrat-controlled Senate and President Joe Biden in the Oval Office, Johnson has held firm to conservative values on spending, border security, and economic stability. His leadership has been defined by a commitment to reversing Democrat policies that have fueled inflation, border chaos, and energy dependency.
The situation in the House, however, remains fluid. As of midweek, Republicans were projected to win 210 seats to the Democrats’ 194, with 218 required for a majority. Although sources indicate a 95% chance of a GOP majority, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) cautioned that races in Arizona, Oregon, Iowa, and California were still too close to call. “The party that will hold the majority… has yet to be determined,” Jeffries remarked, urging patience as votes continue to be tallied.
Johnson’s call for unified conservative governance received a powerful endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who celebrated Johnson’s leadership as “terrific” during a victory speech in Florida. Johnson has made no secret of his alignment with Trump’s agenda, listing priorities that are in step with the “Make America Great Again” platform.
Among his policy objectives, Johnson highlighted a push for:
Secure borders to address the unprecedented immigration crisis
Lower costs to counter inflation that has squeezed American households
Peace through strength to reestablish U.S. global leadership
Common-sense governance to return accountability and reduce bureaucracy
Johnson’s vision is for a unified Republican government that capitalizes on the next two years to enact what he describes as “the most consequential Congress of the modern era.”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), who is also vying to retain his leadership role, echoed Johnson’s priorities. In his letter to GOP members, Scalise introduced a “First 100-Day Agenda” focused on bolstering conservative policies. Key actions include cementing the “Trump Tax Cuts,” promoting American energy independence, and directing substantial resources to the southern border to address the migrant surge.
Both Johnson and Scalise are crafting a platform aimed squarely at reversing the last four years of Democratic control, setting the stage for a decisive return to conservative governance. If Republicans secure the House and Senate, Johnson’s leadership could serve as a pivot point, placing the GOP in the driver’s seat for the first time since the early Trump years.
With this commitment to “take the field” in defense of American values, Johnson is making it clear: the GOP’s new agenda will be unapologetically bold.
