Congressman Lawler Confident Mike Johnson Will Retain Speakership
Republican unity and Trump’s mandate drive strong support for Johnson’s leadership.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) expressed unwavering confidence over the weekend that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will retain his position when the new Congress convenes next month. Speaking on ABC’s This Week with Jonathan Karl, Lawler defended Johnson’s leadership and dismissed efforts to unseat him as counterproductive and self-defeating.
Strong Support for Johnson
When asked if Johnson will and should be re-elected as speaker, Lawler responded emphatically, “Yes, and yes.” He underscored the challenges Johnson inherited, pointing to the chaos caused by Rep. Matt Gaetz and other Republicans who joined forces with Democrats to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
“That will go down as the single stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in politics,” Lawler said. “With that said, removing Mike Johnson would equally be as stupid.”
Johnson’s Leadership Record
Lawler praised Johnson as “arguably the most conservative speaker that’s ever been elected to the office” and credited him with keeping the Republican conference unified during challenging times.
Key achievements under Johnson’s leadership include:
Party Unity: Johnson has maintained cohesion among House Republicans, navigating divisions that plagued his predecessors.
Legislative Progress: He has successfully advanced major initiatives, ensuring Republicans deliver results for their constituents.
Electoral Success: Johnson played a critical role in holding the GOP’s House majority, particularly in competitive districts like Lawler’s.
A Mandate to Govern
Lawler emphasized the importance of Republicans capitalizing on their control of both the House and Senate to fulfill President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda. “We have a mandate to govern,” he stated. “Removing Mike Johnson is not just unnecessary it’s reckless.”
Lawler warned against factionalism within the GOP, urging his colleagues to focus on delivering results for the American people. “If they think somehow that they are going to end up in a stronger position by removing Mike Johnson, they’re not,” he declared.
As Republicans prepare for a pivotal year in Congress, Johnson’s leadership will be critical in advancing conservative priorities and ensuring the GOP remains unified heading into the next election cycle.
