Mike Johnson Eyes Major Obamacare Reform if Trump Wins

GOP prepares for "massive reform" as Johnson outlines plans for the ACA under a Trump administration.

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced a renewed Republican drive to overhaul the Affordable Care Act (ACA) if former President Donald Trump secures a second term. Speaking at a campaign event in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Johnson called Obamacare a “lousy” program, affirming that reforming the ACA would be a top priority under Republican leadership.

Johnson’s comments came while he was campaigning for GOP House candidate Ryan Mackenzie, and they underscored the GOP's view that the ACA, implemented during the Obama era, is ripe for a major rework. Johnson pointed to Trump’s past reforms as a preview of what Republicans aim to achieve. “Health care reform’s going to be a big part of the agenda,” Johnson stated, adding that the GOP would hit the ground running with an aggressive legislative agenda.

Johnson hinted at a more robust strategy for healthcare reform, stating:

  • "No Obamacare": When asked directly about the fate of Obamacare, Johnson made clear the GOP’s position, saying “No Obamacare,” as the party aims to cut down the bureaucracy tied to the program.

  • Massive Reform: Acknowledging that the ACA is “deeply ingrained” in U.S. healthcare, Johnson stressed the need for comprehensive changes that actually improve the program’s cost-efficiency and accessibility.

  • First 100 Days Focus: If Republicans reclaim the White House, they plan to act swiftly in early 2025, taking a fresh look at healthcare reform as one of their flagship initiatives.

Not surprisingly, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign seized on Johnson’s comments, accusing the GOP of planning to erase the ACA altogether. “Health care is on the ballot this November,” Harris’ campaign spokeswoman claimed, asserting that a Trump victory would signal the end of Obamacare. This attack is reminiscent of Democratic fearmongering from Trump’s first term when his administration tried to repeal and replace the ACA, only to be stymied by a trio of Republican senators who sided with Democrats to kill the bill.

Johnson fired back, insisting the Democrats’ claims are misleading. “I offered no such promise to end ObamaCare, and in fact acknowledged that the policy is ‘deeply ingrained’ in our health care system,” Johnson clarified. He emphasized that the GOP’s primary goal is to reduce healthcare costs while improving access and quality, a mission that resonates with many Americans who have found themselves struggling under Obamacare’s high premiums and limited options.

Trump’s first term saw notable actions that took aim at the ACA’s more unpopular aspects. In 2017, Trump eliminated the individual mandate, which required Americans to purchase insurance or face penalties, using a tax bill to remove this punitive measure. Though the full repeal effort failed, the removal of the individual mandate was a significant rollback that won widespread support among Republicans.

As the 2024 election approaches, healthcare is sure to be a top issue, with voters on both sides closely watching how each party plans to address soaring costs and insurance mandates. A Trump-Johnson ticket would likely bring a renewed push for freedom of choice in healthcare, contrasting with the Democrats' preference for centralized control.

America deserves a healthcare system that serves the people, not the bureaucracy. A vote for Republicans could mean the reform Americans have been waiting for.
