Mike Johnson Confronts CBS Host Margaret Brennan on Voter Integrity Efforts
House Speaker takes on left-wing bias, defends Republican efforts to ensure election security.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) did not back down during a fiery exchange with CBS News host Margaret Brennan over voter integrity concerns during an interview on Face the Nation this past Sunday. Johnson, a vocal proponent of stronger election security, called out the Biden administration's actions as undermining the integrity of state elections despite Brennan’s repeated attempts to dismiss his claims.
“I think there is going to be some cheating in this election,” Johnson boldly stated, pointing to concerns over noncitizens voting in U.S. elections. He noted that several states do not require proof of citizenship for voter registration, opening the door for illegal voting, particularly in sanctuary cities and states with loose voter regulations.
Johnson highlighted Virginia as a case in point, referencing how Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order to clean up the state's voter rolls ahead of the upcoming election. However, just weeks before election day, the Biden administration filed a lawsuit to block these efforts raising serious concerns about their motivations.
When Brennan tried to paint Johnson’s comments as an attempt to undermine trust in the electoral process, Johnson hit back hard. “It’s not me undermining it. It’s the actions of the Biden-Harris administration and some of these states,” Johnson emphasized.
Johnson also discussed the SAVE Act, a bill passed by the House that requires proof of citizenship before voter registration a common-sense measure Democrats blocked in the Senate. The GOP-led bill was designed to prevent the very concerns Johnson raised, but Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, refused to allow it to move forward.
Brennan continuously deflected Johnson’s points, insisting that noncitizen voting is illegal. While Johnson agreed, he pointed out that without robust safeguards like the SAVE Act, the law is often not enforced. “These are realities, Margaret,” Johnson said. “I wish it weren’t true, but that’s the concern that people have.”
Republicans, including Johnson, have long argued that Democratic policies, particularly their open-border agenda, leave the electoral process vulnerable to manipulation. Johnson’s sharp exchange with Brennan underscores the party's frustration with the mainstream media’s dismissal of these legitimate concerns.
The issue of voter integrity is sure to be a hot topic as we approach the 2024 election. If Democrats continue to block common-sense reforms, they risk further alienating American voters who want to ensure their elections are fair and free from fraud.
