Michael Strahan Apologizes for National Anthem Moment Amid Military Support Backlash
NFL legend and “GMA” host defends his patriotism, citing deep military roots.
NFL analyst and “Good Morning America” host Michael Strahan found himself in the middle of controversy after he was accused of “disrespecting” the national anthem during a pre-Veterans Day broadcast at San Diego’s Naval Base. The backlash stemmed from Strahan’s decision to keep his hands folded in front of him while his cohosts placed their hands over their hearts. Facing accusations of being unpatriotic, Strahan quickly took to social media to clarify his stance and apologize to any who felt disrespected by the gesture.
In a video posted on Instagram, Strahan assured his followers and critics alike that his actions were far from a protest. Rather, he said he was “caught up in the moment” while observing the young service members standing at attention.
“The only statement that should be made and that I wanna make is that I love the military,” Strahan stated. “I’ve always loved the military, and I will always love the military.”
Strahan’s connection to the military is personal. Growing up on a military base, he saw firsthand the commitment and sacrifices of his father, a former Army major, as well as his siblings and other family members who served.
“I’m a military brat,” he continued. “The idea that I’m unpatriotic couldn’t be further from the truth.”
As he recalled, he was captivated by the young sailors standing in disciplined ranks during the anthem. In that moment, Strahan was awestruck by their dedication, reflecting on the freedoms that their service helps preserve. But when he noticed his cohosts had placed their hands over their hearts, he was struck with uncertainty.
“I’m like, ‘Do I be the fool that puts his hand over his heart after, or do I just stand here with my hand in front of me respectfully?’” he explained, saying he opted to keep his hands folded.
Despite this intent, Strahan acknowledged the negative reactions from those who felt let down, especially among military personnel and veterans.
“If that offended any of our military and veterans, I apologize to you because that was never my intent,” he concluded, emphasizing his respect for those who serve.
The incident occurred as Strahan and his “Fox NFL Sunday” colleagues broadcasted live from the Naval Base in San Diego, where they were joined by members of the military. In the broadcast, his cohosts observed the anthem with hands over their hearts, while Strahan stood quietly with his hands folded in front. As images spread on social media, some viewers accused him of showing disrespect, igniting a debate about patriotism and etiquette.
The following day, Strahan shared a post honoring his late father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr., along with a message recognizing the sacrifices of those in uniform. On Veterans Day, he again highlighted his commitment to honoring all military personnel, past and present, to whom he attributes the freedoms Americans hold dear.
For Strahan, this moment was a reminder of the values he’s always held close. His apology, though not required by any law or rule, was a gesture of respect to the military community, reflecting his deep appreciation for the sacrifices made to uphold American values.
