Mexican President Threatens U.S., Accusing It of Causing Mexico’s Problems
Sheinbaum doubles down on far-left rhetoric, sidesteps responsibility for drug and border crises.
Far-left Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is ramping up tensions with the United States, threatening retaliatory tariffs in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada. Trump’s move aims to pressure Mexico to stem the flow of illegal drugs and migrants into the U.S., but Sheinbaum’s response has been to shift blame onto America for her country’s problems.
In a letter addressed to Trump, Sheinbaum warned of "a response in kind" to any tariffs imposed on Mexico, claiming this could jeopardize shared economic interests. She urged for dialogue but used the opportunity to accuse the U.S. of being the root cause of migration and violence in Mexico.
“If even a small percentage of what the United States allocates to war were instead dedicated to building peace and fostering development, it would address the underlying causes of human mobility,” Sheinbaum stated, doubling down on leftist talking points that fail to acknowledge Mexico’s rampant corruption and ineffective governance.
She also attempted to shift responsibility for the ongoing fentanyl crisis, noting that the precursor chemicals come from “Asian countries,” conspicuously avoiding mention of China, the primary supplier.
While Sheinbaum claimed Mexico had reduced illegal crossings into the U.S. by 75%, the facts tell a different story. Over 10 million illegal aliens have crossed into the U.S. from Mexico under the Biden administration, a crisis exacerbated by lax border policies and reliance on the controversial CBP One App.
Former DHS Acting Secretary Chad Wolf exposed the administration’s misleading border numbers earlier this year, revealing that in June 2024:
47,000 illegal aliens scheduled their crossings through the CBP One App.
56,000 “gotaways” evaded border patrol and disappeared into U.S. communities.
30,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela were granted parole and flown directly into the U.S.
This totals over 215,000 illegal crossings in June alone far above the 84,000 figure touted by the Biden administration.
Sheinbaum also pinned Mexico’s violence on U.S.-sourced weapons while downplaying her country’s role in drug trafficking. She claimed Mexico doesn’t consume synthetic drugs but failed to address why her government has been ineffective in stopping drug cartels from producing and exporting narcotics, including fentanyl.
The reality is that drug cartels thrive due to systemic corruption within Mexico’s leadership, a problem Sheinbaum appears unwilling to confront. Instead, she opts to blame the U.S. for Mexico’s skyrocketing violence and ongoing drug trade.
Sheinbaum’s combative tone and deflections highlight a broader trend of leftist leaders refusing accountability while pointing fingers at the U.S. Her threats of tariffs and inflammatory rhetoric do little to address the root causes of Mexico’s crises, including cartel dominance and government ineffectiveness.
As Trump prepares to implement tougher measures, including tariffs, to protect American borders and reduce drug trafficking, it’s clear that Mexico’s leadership must step up. Blaming the U.S. won’t solve Mexico’s problems it’s time for real accountability south of the border.
