Marjorie Taylor Greene to Resign from Congress After Rift with Trump

Once a top MAGA ally, Greene exits after public feud with Trump and conservative backlash.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is stepping down from Congress, ending a turbulent five-year run that once made her a rising star in the MAGA movement but ultimately collapsed under the weight of her increasingly erratic behavior and a now-public fallout with President Donald Trump.

In a video posted to X on Friday night, Greene announced that she would resign from the House of Representatives effective January 5, citing personal convictions and a jab at former allies:

“Loyalty should be a two-way street,” she said. “My self-worth is not defined by a man, but instead by God, who created everything in existence.”

The announcement comes just weeks after President Trump withdrew his endorsement, calling Greene a “ranting lunatic” and accusing her of turning on him after he showed her polling that revealed she had no realistic shot at higher office in Georgia.

“All I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“If the right person runs [in GA-14], they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support.”

Once one of Trump’s most loyal foot soldiers known for her firebrand style, unwavering attacks on Joe Biden, and calls to “impeach everyone” Greene had recently grown critical of Trump and GOP leadership on several issues, including the handling of the Epstein files, Obamacare negotiations, and the government shutdown strategy.

That shift drew the ire of not just Trump, but a growing chorus of conservatives in her own deep-red Georgia district, who began publicly floating primary challenges. Trump’s announcement was widely seen as a green light for challengers to move in, signaling the end of Greene’s political shelf life.

Greene first entered Congress in 2021 riding a wave of conservative populist energy. She quickly became a household name for her take-no-prisoners approach to the left and her unfiltered rhetoric. But that same combative style began to alienate allies especially when it turned inward.

Her appearance on The View earlier this month, where she sparred with liberal hosts on national TV, was widely panned by conservatives as a publicity stunt that made MAGA look unserious. Behind the scenes, reports swirled that Greene was frustrated Trump no longer returned her calls.

It wasn’t long before her critics and Trump himself began calling her out as a distraction, more interested in media headlines than meaningful legislation.

Greene’s resignation triggers a special election in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, one of the safest Republican seats in the country. Governor Brian Kemp will set the election date, which will include both party primaries and a general election likely before the 2026 standard primary cycle.

The district is expected to remain firmly Republican, but Greene’s departure opens the door for a new generation of conservative leadership — one that’s more focused on results and less on drama.

For all her fire and fury, Marjorie Taylor Greene leaves Congress having passed zero major legislation, and having alienated the very movement that once embraced her.

The MAGA movement is bigger than any one personality. And as Trump continues to shape the future of the Republican Party, it’s clear that there’s no room for self-serving distractions only serious fighters committed to America First values.
