Joe Manchin Blames DC Democrats for Losing Working-Class Voters

Former senator says Democrats abandoned workers for welfare, and blew it on the border.

Former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin isn’t pulling punches when it comes to why his former party, the Democrats, have lost the trust of America’s working class. In a recent interview with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, Manchin laid the blame squarely at the feet of the Democratic Party's leadership in Washington arguing they’ve sold out the very people who once made up the backbone of their coalition.

Sitting down with Stewart to promote his new book, Dead Center: In Defense of Common Sense, Manchin addressed the dramatic political realignment of his home state, which has gone from a stronghold of "Blue Dog Democrats" to a bastion of Trump support. West Virginia, once a pillar of union-backed Democrats, has now voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump in three straight elections. And for good reason, says Manchin.

“They want to know what happened to the Washington Democrats,” Manchin told Stewart, flipping the typical media narrative on its head.

According to Manchin, the voters haven’t changed it’s the Democrats in DC who did. And the party’s abandonment of workers in favor of ideological extremism is the reason those voters have walked away.

Manchin’s case is clear:

  • Working Americans feel ignored. Manchin says the people he grew up with coal miners, factory workers, union families believe Democrats now prioritize welfare for the able-bodied over jobs for the willing.

  • Perception or not, the damage is done. Stewart tried to dismiss the criticism as a "caricature" of social programs. But Manchin hit back, noting that perception is reality for voters who feel left behind.

  • The Democrats' border blunder cemented the divide. Manchin admitted his party made a critical mistake by pushing asylum at the southern border without any serious attempt at security a move he says opened the door for Trump to lead on immigration.

“We want to have a secure border and please, will he [Trump] work with us,” Manchin added, calling for cooperation with the former president, not resistance.

It’s an extraordinary shift from a man who spent his entire political life as a Democrat. But Manchin, now an Independent, is only echoing what millions of Americans have already realized the modern Democratic Party no longer represents the working class. They’ve been hijacked by coastal elites, radical activists, and academic ideologues who care more about pronouns and climate virtue-signaling than about jobs, borders, or economic survival.

And the data backs it up. According to a 2024 Pew Research survey, Trump now holds a 28-point lead over Biden among white non-college voters, the largest margin in modern history. The shift isn’t accidental it’s the result of years of Democrats turning their backs on the people who once made them relevant.

Even Stewart a reliable voice of the Left seemed unsettled by Manchin’s critique. But instead of listening, he reverted to the usual progressive line: defending bloated welfare programs and downplaying legitimate concerns about border chaos and economic stagnation.

Manchin, to his credit, wasn’t buying it. He knows that real leadership requires listening to the people who build this country not lecturing them from late-night studios or Capitol Hill committee rooms.

As 2024 looms, the Democratic establishment would be wise to heed Manchin’s warning. If they don’t, they’ll lose even more ground in places like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan states that still believe in hard work, secure borders, and common sense.
