Liz Cheney Supports Kamala Harris Despite Earlier Radicalism Warnings

Former Republican congresswoman shocks conservatives with endorsement of Democratic VP candidate.

In a stunning turn of events, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Wednesday, despite her previous warnings about Harris’ far-left ideology. Speaking at Duke University, Cheney urged voters to reject former President Donald Trump and throw their support behind Harris, a candidate she once called a dangerous radical.

“I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Cheney said. She framed her decision as one rooted in a deep concern for the Constitution, stating, “Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I’ll be voting for Kamala Harris.”

The endorsement came as a shock to conservatives, especially given Cheney’s vocal opposition to Harris during the 2020 election cycle. At that time, Cheney painted Harris as a radical liberal whose policies would devastate the nation. “Kamala Harris is a radical liberal who would raise taxes, take away guns & health insurance, and explode the size and power of the federal government,” Cheney posted on X in 2020. She warned that Harris sought to “recreate America” in the image of the chaos seen in cities like Portland and Seattle.

Cheney also went after Harris for supporting policies that would allow convicted terrorists to vote in U.S. elections, remarks that Harris made during a CNN town hall. Cheney sarcastically referred to this idea as an “Absentee ballots for al Qaeda” program, leaving no doubt about her disdain for Harris’ position.

Cheney’s past critiques of Harris extended beyond national security, as she also attacked the vice president’s health care policies. During the 2020 campaign, Cheney accused Harris of misleading voters about her health care plans, which she said would strip millions of Americans of their private insurance and increase federal control.

Despite this long history of opposition, Cheney now appears to view Harris as the lesser of two evils compared to Trump. Her endorsement of Harris is likely to draw criticism from Republicans who have already turned on her following her opposition to Trump during and after the January 6 Capitol riot.

While Cheney’s newfound support for Harris might seem shocking, it reflects a broader trend of anti-Trump Republicans aligning themselves with unlikely political allies in an effort to stop Trump from returning to power. Whether this endorsement will have any sway in a deeply polarized political landscape remains to be seen.
