Senate Confirms Linda McMahon to Lead Education Department as Trump Pushes for Its Dismantling

The new Education Secretary aims to shift power back to states and promote school choice.

The Senate has confirmed Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education, approving President Donald Trump’s pick to lead an agency he ultimately wants to dismantle.

  • McMahon’s confirmation passed in a 51-45 Senate vote.

  • Trump has tasked her with shifting education control back to the states.

  • Her top priorities include school choice and cutting federal bureaucracy.

“It’s an honor to serve as the 13th Secretary of Education under President Trump,” McMahon wrote on X, emphasizing her commitment to making American education the best in the world and returning power to the states.

McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment and head of the Small Business Administration in Trump’s first term, later led the America First Policy Institute (AFPI). Despite not being a career educator, her experience in leadership and policy reform aligns with Trump’s vision of reducing federal interference in education.

During her Senate confirmation hearings, McMahon reaffirmed her mission to decentralize the Education Department and promote school choice, stating, “Every student has his or her own needs and aspirations. We must empower those closest to the student to make the best decisions.”

The confirmation vote fell mostly along party lines, with Republicans supporting McMahon’s school choice initiatives while Democrats, led by Sen. Bernie Sanders, opposed her, citing concerns over diverting funds from public schools.

Trump’s long-standing goal to dismantle the Department of Education stems from his belief that education should be controlled at the state and local levels rather than dictated by Washington bureaucrats. He even remarked that McMahon should “put herself out of a job” by successfully shifting responsibilities away from the federal government.

The Education Department has long been a bloated agency with little to show for its growing budget. American students continue to lag behind in global rankings, while progressive policies have overtaken academic excellence. With McMahon at the helm, expect a battle over school choice, funding allocation, and the future role of the federal government in education.
