LA Times Owner Admits Endorsing Karen Bass Was a ‘Mistake’

As wildfires devastate California, even left-wing media regrets backing incompetent leadership.

In a stunning admission, Los Angeles Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong declared that endorsing Karen Bass for mayor was a “mistake”, acknowledging the disastrous consequences of her failed leadership as California wildfires rage.

Speaking with Sean Spicer on 2Way, Soon-Shiong didn’t hold back, taking responsibility for the paper’s role in propping up Bass despite her clear lack of qualifications. “At the L.A. Times, we endorsed Karen Bass. I think right now in front, that’s a mistake and we admit that.”

His remarks come as Bass faces intense scrutiny for her response to the wildfires, which have caused over $50 billion in damage and exposed severe failures in emergency preparedness. Even worse, Bass previously slashed $18 million from the city’s fire department budget, crippling L.A.’s ability to respond effectively.

Soon-Shiong later took to X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing that competency should matter more than political ideology:

  • “Maybe the lesson we learned out of this catastrophe in California is to now vote not based on left or right or D versus R but perhaps based on competent or no experience in operating a job!!”

  • “We have to elect based on competence… yes, competence matters.”

This rare moment of honesty from a powerful left-wing media figure underscores what conservatives have been saying for years: Democrats prioritize politics over leadership, and the results are devastating.

Bass’s incompetence is just one piece of California’s broader crisis under Democratic rule. Governor Gavin Newsom has done little to prevent these wildfires despite years of warnings, and the state’s leadership continues to push radical policies that leave residents vulnerable to disaster.

The question now is whether voters will finally wake up and reject the failed leadership that keeps putting lives, homes, and businesses at risk.
