Klobuchar Weighs Governor Run as Minnesota Democrats Face Fallout

With Walz stepping aside in disgrace, Republicans see 2026 as a prime opportunity to flip Minnesota.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar is reportedly considering a run for Minnesota governor in 2026 after Gov. Tim Walz announced he won’t seek a third term an announcement driven not by public service, but by the growing cloud of fraud and failure hovering over his administration.

Klobuchar, a longtime Democratic mainstay, met privately with Walz over the weekend and praised him publicly for his “dedication” to the state. But what she didn’t mention is the real reason he’s bailing out the catastrophic scandals involving taxpayer-funded fraud, including the Feeding Our Future scam that siphoned off over $250 million under his watch.

Now Klobuchar is circling the power vacuum and the implications are significant.

  • If she runs and wins, she would handpick her own Senate replacement, giving Democrats yet another undemocratic appointment to a key seat.

  • Her move would further complicate an already messy Democrat primary for the open Senate seat left by retiring Sen. Tina Smith, with Rep. Angie Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan already battling it out.

  • All of this chaos comes as Republicans gain momentum, especially after Trump closed the gap in Minnesota to just over 4% in 2024 a major shift in a state Democrats have long taken for granted.

Klobuchar's potential run isn't about “serving Minnesotans,” it’s a power play to keep control of a crumbling political machine that’s been rocked by scandal after scandal. Her own 2024 re-election may have seemed comfortable with a 16-point win over Royce White, but times are changing fast and voters are watching closely.

The Republican Governors Association didn’t mince words:

“After presiding over one of the biggest fraud scandals in history, it’s no wonder that Tim Walz is being forced to drop his re-election bid,” said Communications Director Courtney Alexander. “Whoever Democrats choose to replace Walz will need to defend years of mismanagement and misplaced priorities.”

They’re right. This isn’t just about one failed governor it’s about an entire state party that’s ignored accountability while corruption thrived under its nose.

Let’s not forget:

  • Thousands of taxpayer dollars were funneled through fake charities and daycare schemes while Democrats like Flanagan and Craig looked the other way.

  • State agencies under Walz’s control failed repeatedly to flag or prevent fraudulent billing, leading to an avalanche of federal investigations.

  • And now, as the political fallout intensifies, Democrats are scrambling to rearrange chairs on a sinking ship.

Republicans see 2026 as a real opportunity to flip both the governor’s mansion and a Senate seat. The last time a Republican held either position was over a decade ago but Minnesota’s political landscape is shifting. The fraud, the cover-ups, the arrogance it’s all catching up.

Even as Democrats throw barbs about Trump, it’s clear who let Minnesota spiral into dysfunction. The GOP isn’t just running on rhetoric; they’re running against an actual record of failure, and Minnesotans know it.

If Klobuchar enters the race, it won’t be out of duty it’ll be out of desperation to keep a faltering party on life support. Republicans would be wise to lean into this moment with bold, unapologetic leadership and candidates who will clean house in St. Paul.
