Ken Paxton Fights New York Over Shielding Mail-Order Abortionist
Texas Attorney General demands accountability for illegal abortion pill shipments despite liberal state interference.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is taking a stand against what he calls liberal attempts to protect radical abortionists from facing justice. On Monday, Paxton filed a legal petition targeting New York’s Acting Ulster County Clerk, Taylor Bruck, for obstructing his enforcement of a $100,000 penalty against New York-based abortionist Margaret Carpenter.
Carpenter was found guilty earlier this year by a Texas court for illegally mailing abortion pills into the state, an act that not only violated Texas law but reportedly left a Collin County woman hospitalized and ended the life of her unborn child. Paxton insists that no state should be able to shield individuals from legal consequences when they knowingly break another state’s laws.
“Dr. Carpenter is a radical abortionist who must face justice, not get legal protection from New York liberals intent on ending the lives of as many unborn children as they can,” Paxton said. “No matter where they reside, pro-abortion extremists who send drugs designed to kill the unborn into Texas will face the full force of our state’s pro-life laws.”
New York passed a “shield law” designed to protect abortion providers from prosecution or civil penalties imposed by pro-life states like Texas and Louisiana. This legal maneuver has sparked outrage among conservatives, who argue that blue states are deliberately undermining the rule of law and obstructing justice.
Paxton is now seeking a writ of mandamus to compel Bruck to enforce the Texas judgment and collect the penalty. The case underscores a growing clash between conservative and progressive states as post-Roe America grapples with sharply contrasting abortion policies.
The Texas case isn’t Carpenter’s only legal trouble. She has also been indicted in Louisiana for criminal abortion involving abortion-inducing drugs. Authorities allege she mailed pills to a woman who then pressured her underage daughter to take them, resulting in the death of the unborn child.
This cross-state legal battle highlights the growing trend of mail-order abortions, which pro-life advocates warn are being used to bypass state restrictions and endanger women’s health. According to the Guttmacher Institute, mail-order abortion pills now account for over 50% of abortions nationwide, raising concerns about oversight and the potential for abuse.
Paxton has made it clear that Texas will aggressively enforce its pro-life laws, regardless of political interference from other states. His office has already pursued several legal actions against providers who attempt to defy Texas regulations, setting a precedent for how conservative states intend to combat the growing mail-order abortion industry.
While New York officials like Bruck and pro-abortion Democrats attempt to frame the shield law as a “protection of rights,” critics argue it’s a dangerous attempt to erode the sovereignty of other states and put political ideology ahead of justice and safety.
Paxton’s legal battle is just getting started and it could set the stage for a major constitutional showdown over states’ rights, life protections, and federalism.
