Katherine Heigl Defends Mar a Lago Charity Appearance

The actress says criticism of her attendance at a Florida fundraiser misses the point of supporting animal rescue efforts.

Actress Katherine Heigl is pushing back after facing criticism for attending a charity event at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” star said her appearance at the Wine, Women & Shoes fundraiser was about supporting animal rescue efforts not politics.

The annual event benefits Big Dog Ranch Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and rehoming dogs.

Heigl addressed the controversy directly after critics questioned why she would attend an event held at a Trump property.

“Animals don’t vote,” Heigl said in a statement explaining her decision.

“The only room they don’t like is the euthanasia room at a shelter. They are completely at the mercy of us and they have no voice of their own.”

The actress emphasized that animal welfare has long been one of her personal priorities.

Along with her mother, Nancy Heigl, she has spent years advocating for rescue animals through the Jason Heigl Foundation, an organization that works to promote pet adoption and reduce euthanasia rates in shelters.

“This event was about animal advocacy,” Heigl said. “Something that has always been deeply personal to me.”

Animal rescue remains a major issue in the United States.

According to national animal welfare groups:

  • Roughly 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters each year.

  • An estimated 920,000 animals are euthanized annually due to overcrowding and lack of adoption.

  • Rescue organizations play a major role in reducing those numbers through adoption programs.

Heigl also responded directly to critics on social media who questioned her participation in the event.

One commenter accused her of poor judgment for attending a fundraiser held at Mar-a-Lago.

Heigl pushed back, suggesting that criticism on social media does little to help animals in need.

“Do you think comments on an Instagram post matter to animals who have had humans pour gasoline on them and set them on fire?” she asked in one response.

She also challenged critics to reflect on whether they had personally supported animal rescue efforts.

“Have you donated a significant part of your income to anything you claim to care about?” she wrote. “Or have you done anything more than comment on what someone else is doing?”

The charity event attracted several well-known guests.

Among those attending were celebrity dog trainer Cesar Millan, former television host Jeanine Pirro, and Lara Trump, who helped co-found Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

The fundraiser aimed to support the organization’s work rescuing animals from overcrowded shelters and placing them with adoptive families.

Despite the online backlash, Heigl maintained that animal welfare should not be a political issue.

“As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent,” she said.

The actress has historically avoided political commentary.

In the past, she has said that politics is not something she focuses on publicly, once remarking during a past election cycle that she preferred to stay out of political debates.

For Heigl, the focus remains on animal rescue rather than partisan disagreements.
