Teen Suspect in Austin Metcalf Case Released to House Arrest
Karmelo Anthony released after judge slashes bond in fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.

A Texas community is reeling after a judge granted house arrest to a 17-year-old charged with murdering high school athlete Austin Metcalf a decision that has sparked outrage and disbelief.
Karmelo Anthony, the teen accused of fatally stabbing Metcalf during a track meet, had his $1 million bond reduced to $250,000 on Monday by a Collin County judge. If his family can post the lowered bond, Anthony will walk free on house arrest, monitored by an ankle bracelet and confined to his parents’ home.
This ruling comes just two weeks after Anthony allegedly confessed to police with the words, “I did it.” The deadly altercation reportedly began when Metcalf told Anthony he was sitting in the wrong seat. Moments later, the honor student and football MVP lay dying in his twin brother’s arms.
Austin Metcalf’s life wasn’t just promising it was inspiring:
4.0 GPA, team MVP, and a leader both on and off the field.
Passionate about football and determined to take his game to the next level.
Described by his father as a light in every room he entered.
“His commitment, dedication, leadership, and sheer grit made him rise to the level of success that he desired,” his father wrote in a heartbreaking fundraiser post. “I love you forever, son. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.”
Yet somehow, a judge decided the accused killer deserved leniency.
During the bond hearing, prosecutors pointed to a prior assault involving Anthony, just two months before the stabbing. But the judge brushed it aside, citing his lack of formal criminal history. They also questioned the family’s decision not to use nearly $500,000 raised through an online fundraiser allegedly set up by Anthony’s family to pay for the bond.
The defense claimed the fundraiser was “not a bond fund,” but rather meant to support the family during financial hardship. Meanwhile, the fundraiser for the victim’s family sits at just over $340,000, despite the community’s outpouring of grief and support.
This case raises serious questions:
Why is a confessed killer being granted house arrest, while a family mourns their son?
Why is a violent offender’s family raking in donations with little scrutiny?
And how does a prior assault not factor into the bond decision for a teen charged with cold-blooded murder?
Justice is supposed to protect the innocent and hold the guilty accountable. Instead, we're seeing a system that seems more concerned with accommodating the accused than honoring the life of a young man taken far too soon.
Austin Metcalf was a model student, a gifted athlete, a leader. He did everything right and now he's gone.
Meanwhile, his killer may soon be watching TV from the comfort of home.
