Kamala Harris Bows Out of California Governor Race
As her political star continues to fade, Harris says she won’t seek office but won’t rule out another comeback attempt.

Kamala Harris, once hailed as the future of the Democratic Party, has quietly stepped aside from yet another political opportunity. On Wednesday, the former Vice President confirmed that she will not run for governor of California a race many had expected her to enter as a way to revive her stalled career.
“After deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election,” Harris said in a post on X. “For now, my leadership and public service will not be in elected office.”
Translation: after being resoundingly rejected by voters in the 2024 presidential election, she’s retreating but leaving the door open for yet another run down the line.
Harris’s political career has been a masterclass in hype over substance. From her time as a lackluster California Attorney General to her gaffe-filled and ineffectual stint as Vice President under Joe Biden, Harris has struggled to connect with the public. Poll after poll shows she’s deeply unpopular across both parties — with a recent national survey placing her approval rating under 35%, even among key Democratic demographics.
Her decision to sit out the governor’s race raises serious questions about her political future:
She failed to deliver results on major issues like border security and voting rights when handed national assignments as VP.
She’s lost favor even in deep-blue California, where her own party quietly hoped for a fresher, more viable candidate.
She still hasn’t addressed her crushing 2024 loss to Donald Trump, which effectively ended her tenure as the Democratic frontrunner.
And yet, Harris hints she’s not done.
“I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people… and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans,” she added a not-so-subtle teaser for future ambitions, possibly even another White House run in 2028.
But voters aren’t clamoring for a comeback. They remember the disastrous press conferences, the awkward laughs, the incoherent answers on critical issues, and the blatant failures under her leadership. What they don’t remember is a single accomplishment.
Harris’s withdrawal from the governor's race reshuffles California’s political deck, clearing space for others in a party scrambling to reinvent itself after years of failure. But for Harris, the message from voters has been clear: no more empty slogans, no more identity politics and no more Kamala.
