Harris Losing Ground in Popular Vote Against Trump
Harris’ lead shrinks to less than a point with Trump gaining momentum in final stretch.
With just two weeks until Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris is losing the once-comfortable popular vote advantage she held over former President Donald Trump. According to the latest numbers from Decision Desk HQ, Harris is now polling at 48.6%, with Trump closing in at 47.7% a margin of less than one point. This dramatic shift comes as Trump’s campaign gains momentum in key battleground states.
The new polling data marks a significant shift from earlier this year. When President Joe Biden officially stepped aside and Harris was named the Democratic nominee, Trump held a 7% lead over her in national polling. However, by last month, Harris managed to flip that lead, boasting a 3-point advantage. Now, with Trump surging in the final weeks, the gap has narrowed once again.
A USA Today/Suffolk University poll conducted from October 14-18 reflects a similar trend. Harris’ lead over Trump has shrunk to just one point, with 1,000 likely voters participating in the survey. The margin of error in the poll is plus or minus 3.1%, indicating a race too close to call. Notably, in August, Harris led by 4 points in the same poll, suggesting that the race has shifted back toward Trump since the Democratic National Convention.
Trump’s campaign has been relentless in recent weeks, with the former president holding rallies across key states like Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and Michigan. His schedule also includes a major rally in New York at Madison Square Garden on October 27, signaling his confidence in capturing support even in deep blue states.
Harris, on the other hand, took a break from the campaign trail this Tuesday, leading some to speculate about exhaustion an accusation she has previously aimed at Trump. Her final two weeks of campaigning include high-profile appearances with former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama in states like Georgia and Michigan, where she hopes to energize voters in the race’s final days.
With polls tightening across the country and Trump’s momentum surging, both campaigns are ramping up their efforts to secure the national popular vote and critical swing states. Harris’ narrow lead over Trump shows how volatile this election remains, with every day bringing new developments that could sway the outcome.
