Harris Caught Lying About Gun Confiscation in Debate, Muir Remains Silent
Despite prior support for mandatory buybacks, Harris denied plans for gun confiscation during live debate.
Vice President Kamala Harris blatantly lied about her stance on gun confiscation during Tuesday night’s debate, claiming she had no intention of taking away Americans’ guns despite her well-documented support for mandatory gun buyback programs. ABC News moderator David Muir, who knew of her past statements, let her falsehood go unchecked.
The exchange began when former President Donald Trump highlighted Harris’s track record on gun control. “She has a plan to confiscate everybody’s gun,” Trump stated, pointing to her public support for buyback programs as evidence.
Harris quickly pushed back, saying, “Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking anybody’s guns away.” She accused Trump of spreading falsehoods, but the facts tell a different story.
Harris’s previous statements on gun buybacks are clear:
During her failed 2019 presidential campaign, Harris openly supported a mandatory gun buyback program, a policy that would force law-abiding Americans to turn in certain types of firearms, including so-called "assault weapons."
When challenged on the constitutionality of such an approach during a Democratic primary debate, Harris brushed off concerns, telling then-candidate Joe Biden, “Let’s say yes we can,” when pressed on whether an executive order could be used to enforce gun buybacks.
Harris’s claim during this latest debate flies in the face of her earlier rhetoric. Despite her efforts to appear moderate on gun control, her record shows otherwise. In 2019, she joined the ranks of Democrats who pushed for confiscatory policies, using the veil of a buyback to strip legal gun owners of their firearms.
Moderator David Muir, who had previously pressed Harris on the constitutionality of gun buybacks during the 2019 primary, chose to remain silent during Tuesday's debate. He allowed Harris to paint herself as a responsible gun owner, all while dismissing her past support for sweeping gun control measures that would result in confiscation.
The incident highlights a broader issue: politicians like Harris, who shift their positions depending on the audience, and a media that often refuses to hold them accountable. While Harris may attempt to reframe her record on guns to appeal to moderate voters, her previous comments and policy proposals tell a different story.
As the 2024 election approaches, voters deserve transparency on where candidates stand on key issues like the Second Amendment. If Harris is willing to obscure her record on gun control, what else might she be misleading the American people about?
